Youths convicted for gang fight
Shin Min Daily News
Four youths have been convicted for taking part in a gang fight earlier this year.
The fight came about after a petty text argument between two young girls. The two girls, Wang Yu Min, 13, and Wang Cai Yin, 16, arranged to meet at 7.30pm, at Pioneer mall located at Jurong West Street 61, on 16 May this year, to settle their differences.
Wang Yu Min, 13, went to the confrontation with her boyfriend, Lai Yu Wei, (23, full-time national serviceman) and five others. Wang Cai Yin, 16, also had her boyfriend, Huang Zhi Wei, (22, NSF) a gang member, to accompany her.
When the couple found the rival group much bigger, Huang Zhi Wei hurriedly called three friends to back them up. They are Li Bing Ru (18, hawker assistant), Chen Li Wei, 21, and Chen Li Tan, 21.
Li Bing Ru also brought along an 11cm-long knife to the confrontation.
When the two groups met, Huang Zhi Wei's group yelled at the other group, demanding to know which gang their rivals belonged to. When the other group answered, the group of four attacked.
During the fight, Li Bing Ru slashed Lai Yu Wei on the left side of his face and stabbed him several times in the back. The rest of Huang Zhi Wei's group continued to kick and punch Lai even after he had collapsed.
In the attack, Lai suffered a 10cm cut on the left side of his face, and injured his right lung after he was stabbed in his chest. Huang Zhi Wei's group fled to Li Bing Ru's home after the fight. They washed the knife clean of blood and hid it in Li's bedroom.
Chen Li Tan and Chen Li Wei have since been sentenced to 12 months and 20 months' jail respectively. Li Bing Ru was also found to be a loanshark runner and will be sentenced on 28 December pending a reformative training report. Huang Zhi Wei's case is pending as he is also linked to other cases.
