Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Singapore office of a United States-headquartered technology company has shed a third of its staff, which included forgoing 60 places that would have been filled by Employment Pass (EP) holders.

The main reason? "We can't afford it
," a regional vice-president for the company told The Straits Times, citing how minimum EP salary requirements have been raised three times in under three years. These are roles that Singaporeans could not have filled as they required proficiency in languages such as Thai or Vietnamese, she added.

A general exodus of EP holders since the pandemic began has prompted some soul-searching as to whether Singapore is still a choice destination for such talent, an issue that directly affects the Republic's overall competitiveness.

What kind of fuckup journalism is this?

no head no tail who is the company?
Another fairy tale to tell Sinkies that FTs create good jobs?

Without FTs, there won't be PMET job vacancies for supporting sinkies. That's a fact.

They setup shop in Singapore to evade tax but instead of employing Singaporeans. They employ foreigners to cater to foreign markets.

Either something is wrong here with the mentality of the companies or the government wasn't too bright.

I don't think Singaporeans leaders are very cunning but only like bully Singaporeans.

Tell them to open office in another asian country and see if the local govt there will open legs like the prostitute PAP.
They almost will be chased out if they try to employ non locals.

PAP is very cunning indeed. Out of 30 jobs going to FTs sinkies might get a one or two token jobs if companies are grateful. Yet all 30 contribute to real estate demand, local consumption and various taxes. Every body wins when FTs win. Every body who can benefit that is. Every body who can not feel envy for those that do. The PAP think they are so smart, but they and their lackeys are but book worms.

no loss to us
just fuckoff

As usual they manage to spin it that Sinkies are to be blamed for not mastering the Thai language! Lol

Which asiatic country's currency is as strong as PAP Singapore? Most sinkies are reluctant to earn their income in ruppiah, ringgit or lira.

Most of our companies here hire locals.

Calm down bros, although we as Singaporeans have much reasons to be angry with. It may be just one company, does not seem to be a loss, but if more companies follow such, an exodus of companies will follow, with result of more Sporeans hardworking PMETS sidelined.

Thus, may MOM keep calm, be rationale, & listen to cooler heads, to prevent an exodus, & based policies on EVERY angle than on fears.

Language proficiency is not an ability only foreigners are capable of. Each are human & have every ability to LEARN. With social media inter-connectiveness, NOT just language, but EVERY educational ability is within grasp by a mere click of a mouse button & time DRASTICALLY shorten for learning & language, even job specific rocket science as each PMET or Singaporean would have the NECESSARY FOUNDATIONS for learning during their education & work-experienced years.

Thus ANY company that intends to make use of Singapore's strategic economic, social & financial stability connectiveness, MUST give locals a chance FIRST to be PREPARED to take on roles & job opportunities, which can be as short as 3 months, FAR SHORTER than the long term plans foreign companies will have to invest in other nations that are unstable & corrupted in many ways than Singapore.

If they think they want to undercut risks management, then they WILL have to answer to their investors & shareholders for their failures for residing in unstable smooth tongue environments when Singapore could have been a better alternative.
