Do you think separately host yr SQL db apart from your Apache & PHP could help?
I played around with various alternative configurations of server before.
During the era of 32 bit, I maintained a simple system, all-in-1 LAMP. (Linux Apache MySQL PHP). During the initial stage of migration towards 64 bit, I took it apart. The SQL got moved into a 64bit Ubuntu box, while the PHP & Apache stayed at 32 bit. Performance improved. Later everything went to 64 bit, LAMP got integrated again.
In some of my works, SQL servers are also split up. Some db are in-house LAN and some on web-hosted servers. I run a crontab and perl script to port data across them.
Is it possible to split your SQL db used in this forum, such that the bulk of forum reading access a secondary SQL server, while writes / post / update / maintenance goes to a main SQL server, where the 2 servers are in different physical machines?

If I added a separate MySQL server, all the problems would be solved till the number of posts reached around 1,000,000. I'd then need to add another web server and adopt a load balancer configuration.

I suggest disabling embedding vids and pics. People who wish to share such can post the links and people who're interested can click on them; people who're disinterested can surf on without wasting bandwidth and time.

Embedded vids and pics add very little to the server load or the bandwidth as they are served from other hosts.

May be push the SQL DB out to host at a VPS? They have 64 bit, high performance type, seems at same cost. It think 32 bit is there just for reason of compatibility in certain cases.

If I used a US$5.95 plan, this forum would have died 2 years ago. :p It's far too large for any VPS package. I'd be kicked off the server in no time for hogging resources.
The forum is on a dedicated server and has been so since day 1.
The hosting plan costs USD284 per month for unmetered bandwidth. I just paid the bill this morning.
Vbulletin is extremely resource hungry because the huge number of queries it generates. Very few VPS hosting plans allow the installation of vbulletin.
I am looking at one of these packages as the server specs are better than what I'm paying for now. However, there is a bandwidth cap.

Unmetered bandwidth simply means I'm not charged by the Gb.
Assuming the server has sufficient grunt, any latency problems during peak hours would be a result of a bottleneck caused by too small a pipe. It would have nothing to do with the bandwidth allowance.

Bandwidth is not the issue. There is plenty of bandwidth. It is the hardware that is reaching the limit of its capabilities.
As the database gets larger and larger, it places more and more demands on the hardware. For example, if there are only 100 posts in total and a search is conducted, the search will be completed in microseconds.
However the forum now has almost 500,000 posts and every database query has to go through a huge amount of processing before the answer is returned.
The best way to minimise the server load is not to post rubbish and indulge in nonsensical inane exchanges and flame wars.
