Misha Gammell, left, admitting burgling Alex Mather four times
But not ‘spoilt idiot’ Misha Gammell, who committed two more break-ins despite knowing he was being recorded by a webcam.
The son of a British Council boss, who grew up in India and Australia where he went to a £19,000-a-year school, faces jail after admitting burgling Alex Mather four times, taking around £300.
His thefts were captured on a sound-activated camera that estate agent Mather set up after realising money was missing. Jobless Gammell, 26, carried on even after Mr Mather fitted a lock and confronted him with the footage,
Haringey Magistrates’ Court in North London heard.
Chairman Mervyn Mandell said Gammell may go to jail, adding: "There’s a form of stupidity. He’s seen he’s on the webcam and still does it."
Mather, 27, moved into the North London flat in owned by Gammell’s father in August.
Gammell who paid no rent, began stealing from him, leading Mather to install the webcam. Prosecutor Richard Berman said, "The defendant was seen entering, moving money and counting it.
As a result, the victim put a lock on his door." "The victim said, “I’m going to tell your father and the police if this doesn’t stop.”
But Gammell climbed through his window to steal again. Confronted, he begged Mather to keep quiet to save his father from ‘disgrace’.
However, he then tricked a builder into unlocking his flatmate’s door. Mather moved out in October after filming Gammell reading a confession. He will be sentenced next month.
Mather said, "He’s a selfish, spoilt idiot. It’s surprising anyone with so much privilege could have missed so many opportunities to do anything productive."
