The world has just 10 weeks' worth of wheat stockpiled after Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine disrupted supplies from the "breadbasket of Europe".

The UN has been warned that global wheat inventories have fallen to their lowest level since 2008 as food supplies are rocked by a “one-in-a-generation occurrence”.

Official government estimates put world wheat inventories at 33pc of annual consumption, but stocks may have slumped to as low as 20pc, according to agricultural data firm Gro Intelligence. It estimates that there are only 10 weeks of global wheat supply left in stockpiles.

Russia and Ukraine account for around a quarter of the world’s wheat exports and the West fears Mr Putin is trying to weaponise food supplies. Russia is on track for a strong wheat harvest this year, cementing Mr Putin’s control over the staple grain as bad weather spoils production in Europe and the US.

Gro Intelligence chief executive Sara Menker warned global food supplies are being hit by a number of “extraordinary” challenges, including fertiliser shortages, climate disruptions and record low inventories of cooking oils and grains.

She told the UN’s Security Council: “Without substantial immediate and aggressive coordinated global actions, we stand the risk of an extraordinary amount of both human suffering and economic damage.

“This isn’t cyclical, this is seismic. It’s a once-in-a-generation occurrence that can dramatically reshape the geopolitical era.”

Earlier this week, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey warned of “apocalyptic” food price rises as Ukraine struggles to export products.

“Ukraine does have food in store but it can’t get it out at the moment,” he told MPs on the Treasury Committee.

“That is a major worry. It is not just a major worry for this country, it is a major worry for the developing world.”

Keep calm. Wheat is NOT only produced in UKR, but in many other nations that DO have excess for exports, such as India, Canada, USA, France, etc, etc. Only 30% of World wheat production comes from both UKR, & RUS. Wheat is a main ingredient for breads, pastries, cookies, etc, BUT is NOT the only ingredient for such staples. Equally, there are other produce such Rice, tapioca, sweet potato-common in Asia, as well as Coconut, Quinoa, chickpea, Oat, & many more.

Thus, it is not all doomsday or an extinction level event. There will always be alternatives, & Humankind MUST NEVER be held hostage to any event or crisis, or by anyone. Obstacles are only meant to be overcome, NOT surrender to such, as our ancestors had long taught us.

We Humanity WILL overcome & survive, together, & NEVER to be starved by any mortal, as our forefathers had learnt in the 40s when the Imperial Japan Army strangled us with their occupation, stole our resources, but we survived on tapioca, sweet potatoes, fish, etc & even helped to courageously smuggle such to the Brit POWs in camp whom their leaders had sworn to protect us but did not, but a debt of honor to us Singaporeans which they will not forget, fortunately as they are a Rule of Law nation & an allay.

With regards to price rises, may producers or importers of wheat go ahead with their rises. In the end, with many more other resources for flour, we Humankind will just turn to alternatives. Most will not support the RUS invasion, but equally, most will not want the increase in prices of flour - a staple - to induce support, & such attempts will only backfire. For the war in UKR to end, it will need dialogue & RUS put in its place - to respect the Rule of Law & World order after the horrific world wars & carving up of nations even further back, in time, in Europe.

The west weapons industry does not want a peaceful resolution.
They were on the verge of weaponising ukraine before the invasion.
If the west is sincere, they could have assisted russia sfter uSSR collspsed. Invited russia into the EU in the 1990's. In exchange for disarmament. That did not happen. What happened was the west started destroying yugoslavia and other eastern communist states such as Czechoslovakia.breaking them apart.

In fact the hallmarks of the American MICs are evident when they rejected Putin's suggestion that Russia join NATO.
