GCT's one of the shrewdest politicians around in Singapore. His image has always been maintained firm but not bullying, understanding but won't try too hard to please everybody - the statesmanlike image that goes down easy with most Singapore heartlanders. Under his premiership, in contrast wth LKY, ISA arrests or threats thereof dwindled down to zero, until rekindled by anti-terrorist arrests. Perhaps ISD without detainees for too many years lax down their guards and that's why MSK could escape.


Contrast that to LKY and LHL defamation suits against various individuals and publications. Mention they're father and son, that's defamation by insinuating nepotism. Mention HC is their daughter-in-law and wife, that's also defamation by insinuating nepotism. The more they sue this way, frankly, I think that the more their reputation goes down in public view.

LKY to this day remains one of the most respected politicans in the world.
He gets praise even from people like Obama, Clinton, the elder Bush, Blair, etc, people whose words carry weight, and not just your typical singaporean rc member.
Perhaps they don't know everything about him or perhaps they only look at the "big picture" or perhaps they are not personally affected by some of his policies, I don't know, but this is a fact.
His eldest son, on the other hand, does not yet seem to have that level of worldwide respect. Whether he will eventually, nobody knows, but we can all make our guesses.

I don't know whether anyone remembers this, but I vaguely remember a story GCT told during a national day rally speech. One day, he was in his chauffer driven car, when his car was I think, cut off by another car on the road. He told the audience that he wanted to tell the other driver that he had just cut off the pm's car. I can't remember whether he actually said this to the other driver, or that he was just thinking of saying this, but did not eventually.
Can you imagine someone like President Obama saying this? Can you imagine President Ma of Taiwan saying this? He would be lampooned in the press and by the opposition the next day. Say to a country wide audience I mean, I'm sure both would say it to their wives.

You seem confused between acknowledgement and respect. No believer in the democratic process will ever respect a despot such as LKY or his PAP party members.

This despot has enriched himself and his cronies with billions of dollars. The only difference is that this despot used mostly legal money and cleverly used it to invest in foreign companies.

They and he obviously think that he is very popular with the people and that statements made by him will be very persuasive and convinving. To a certain extent, they are probably right. For some reason which I can't fathom, he is very popular with the people.

GCT seems like the PAP fall guy. Remember he was given the unenviable task of trying to regain Potong Pasir and Hougang from CST and LTK. Either way he loses. If he had managed to win these constituencies for PAP, it would be credit to LHL's for his grand strategy. If he loses he is not good enough. It is a lose-lose catch-22 for him. Now he tries to make himself relevant by throwing his 2cents everywhere. Pathetic for a guy who is paid more than S$10,000 a day.

If i recall correctly he din't say anything. His chief security officer told him the other driver will be dealt with in due course. Kopitaim uncles talk is the other driver kenna charge for rash and negligent act...... fined and license suspended.
