There may be more implication than mere embarrassment of demotion. There's no precedent in this case so I'm just conjecturing. An MP who served two full terms is eligible for pension. Pension system is always based on last drawn pay, not necessarily the highest drawn pay.

FUCK YOU LAH!!!!!!!!!!! FUCKING CHEE BYE! :oIo: :oIo: :oIo:

Don't you know when to shut your chee bye mouth? :oIo:

:oIo: :oIo: :oIo:

Interesting point. However, NCMPs are not entitled to pension. Hence, he might get his pension upon losing/stepping down as elected MP, whether he becomes NCMP or not.

Possible too, as I've said, there's no case precedent and it's just conjecture.

Woof. Woof. Woof.

Come and get your bone! :oIo:

I'm just wondering how Chiam voted, because the MSM stated 74 versus 1 and no mention of abstain. The 1 is presumed to be LTK as Sylvia Lim mentioned that he will vote "no". There are 83 MPs eligible to vote (NMP and NCMP cannot vote). But then again most likely Chiam had already left during voting time.

Today newspaper (part of Mediacorp) said on its front page report, 'a PACKED House ... 3 hour debate ....'.

I caught on Ch 8 news, camera shots of Wong Kan Seng & Low Thia Kiang's exchange & several MPs speeches, the House look 50% empty, front bench, back bench, even NMP bench.... PACKED ? pui....

MSM contradicting MSM :(

Dear Elephanto

Out of my league in terms of " Kremlin Watching " but WHAT the HELL was old Shorty doing fronting the debate. ?

GCT LKY errrr LHL errrrrrr where were they ?

Locke

GCT LKY errrr LHL errrrrrr where were they ?Locke
I find LHL's infrequent presence in the House very disturbing - he is setting a bad example to all MPs, hence a half empty House is the rule rather than the exception every time the House sits which is again, rare.

Home Affiars Minister tasked with tabling the necessary Bills as he is part of the 'Leegime' as uncleyap & others like to say.

GCT/ LKY playing an active role in Parliamentary cut & thrust ?
That's beneath us, our value-add is in our high reputation as ex-PMs best deployed as international travellers & deal-makers with foreign VIPs, ask me to table a Bill, let a lesser Minister do that, preferably a 'lee-lated' party .....

Your guess is as good as mine - rumor has it that LHL is in some sort of therapy who knows ?

In another news article, WKS said to let in more NCMP is to meet the wishes of the voters.

He is very wrong. The voters want the GRC scheme to be abolished and real opositions in parliement, not have a backdoor for the tail-coat-riding-wanabes to get in thru the back door.

Looks like the thief is accusing the other for damaging the role of thief by stealing !

BTW, after all the 'debate' bu PAP Mps about why there should not be an increased in NCMP, all of them voted AYE !!. Hypocrites ? That is exactly why real oppositions are needed in parliement, not PAP's puppets.

No leh. The clip where LTK walked back to his seat smiling and the rest laughing, the house did seem very full.

Let me tell you a story. A boy want to marry a girl, the girl's parents said a big OK but want $50,000 bridal gifts. The boy work as technician, cannot afford. So the parents said "we have a female dog in the family, you can marry her for $500 gifts".

This is Singapore politics.

Wong K S sound like he is changing the system to bring in more Oppositions into parliament but I see it as allowing more PAP MPs into parliament. In single ward, if Opposition win means the loser PAP candidate will join as NCMP right?

izzit? Ch 8 news camera on either men speaking, behind them like quite empty..... maybe both front benches are fuller...

wrong.
some pap member push for what u said for this measure to be 'non-partisan' but kenna shot down by Wong. He said this law not meant for PAP, it would have defeated his purpose of having more Opp in ....

The worst are NMP who have no peoples mandate.
Those peoples want to be members of parliament but refuse to fight elections.

They think they speak up for the gays, lesbians, charity, business, civil rights group whatever but please go and get your rights to be in parliament through the ballot boxes.

NMP are the real backdoor.

IMO, there should not be unelected MPs in parliament even if we have a upper and lower house.

It depends on the individual I feel.

Walter Woon, Claire Chiang, Siew Kum Hong etc would have been seen to have made some contribution during their NMP stints (though the last is a bit contentious).

But for deadwood like ex-YPAP Calvin Cheng & butch youth-pastor wannabe Jocelyn Yeo, I honestly don't know why they are there (especially Josecelyn, anyone remember anything noteworthy from her or have seen her attend parliament regularly ?

on the other hand, even for so-called elected MPs, remember in the 70s & 80s, there are PAP MPs who are elected then sent overseas as ambassadors .... that's the most ridiculous thing for PAP Govt to do ! Totally absent in the House or in their constituency !

I don't know how good our NMP are in Parliament but they aren't the peoples representatives and shouldn't be there.
Why are they not fighting elections, gain the peoples mandate and enter parliament?

Walkover MPs has no mandate but have legitimately as they went though the proper channels to be a MP.

NMP are non elected and have no legitimately too.

You can't expect LTK to serve as a NCMP after being an elected MP for 20 years. It's too embarrassing for him.

If the price is right why not? Perhaps this was what Wong meant when he talked about "given out a bigger slice". I'm sure our "gentlemen" opposition including LTK warmed up to WKS' proposal.

lucky no cake there n then or else sure got cake-throwing party.

The exchange between DPM Wong and Mr Low
Wong Kan Seng: What the PAP is trying to do in this situation is not to have its cake and eat it. We're trying to make the cake bigger and give you a piece of it.
MP Low Thia Khiang: But don't forget your cake remains the same, because the elected members remain the same number. What you're trying to do is probably add some dressing, but the Workers' Party (WP) doesn't need that.

Mr Wong: No, we don't need the WP here to be the wallflower. The question is very simple: Is the WP going to take up the (NCMP) seats if we don't have enough (elected) Opposition members?

Mr Low: That's not a system which we will entrench as a political system, but in reality, this is the situation we have to face. It's the same as us opposing the GRC system; it doesn't mean that we don't campaign in the GRC.

I'm very disappointed with LTK.
He should have told WKS and the PAP that since Workers' Party has rejected the NCMP scheme and the GRC system, his Party shall henceforth NOT contest in GRCs and shall NOT take up any NCMP seats if offered by the PAP.
BY SAYING THIS, LTK WOULD BE SENDING A VERY STRONG MESSAGE TO THE SINGAPOREANS THAT IT'S EITHER PROPERLY ELECTED OPPOSTION MP'S OR NO OPPOSTION AT ALL IN PARLIAAMENT. THAT SHOULD BE THE STARK REALITY!!
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "IN REALITY, THE WORKERS' PARTY MUST TAKE PART IN GRC CONTESTS OR MUST ACCEPT NCMP SEATS" !!!!

Sometimes, LTK really deserves the PEP politician tag as described by Chau Ve Nist.

WKS himself better secure his front door while keeping his back door open too. KJ is coming for him.

Most walkover MPs are thru backdoors, I presume.

The system is made in such a way to favour the incumbents. If the oppositions reject the system and not take part in the election, PAP will win by default. Oppositions are put in a very difficult position.
