DPM Wong's China-born parents first came to Singapore in the 1930s to seek a better life. They returned briefly to China after the war but came back in 1949, and became Singapore citizens in 1957. -- ST PHOTO: DESMOND WEE

WHEN Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng's parents first came to Singapore to look for a better life in the 1930s, they sold sundry provisions. But business was not good after World War II, so they returned to their village in Zhongshan prefecture in Guangdong, China, taking their young daughter and son who were born here with them.

After six months, they returned here in 1949. Mr Wong was three years old. 'I don't think the conditions in China were favourable,' Mr Wong, 63, tells Insight. 'Having been in Singapore for some years, my parents thought Singapore was a better place to make a living.' What led them to move here is no different from why many of today's migrants decided to come here.

Back in their village, his parents and others lived off the soil as farmers. When they came here for the second time, they became hawkers in what is today Farrer Park, selling noodles at a coffee shop at the corner of Race Course Road and Owen Road. Life was tough, for they had to move from one rented room to another in the area - including a converted garage - each time the rent went up. They also had three more daughters.

'Since life was still not very good in China in the 1950s, and the children were all here, my parents decided to make Singapore home,' says Mr Wong. They could speak only Cantonese, but picked up bazaar Malay and Hokkien to get by at the market.

After several years, they took over the tenancy of a pre-war single-storey terrace house in Race Course Road, and set up a stall in front of their home. They were determined to give their children a good education, even though Mr Wong's father had only a few years of education and his mother, none.

There were not many English-medium schools then, but the former tenant of their new house helped register Mr Wong in the Rangoon Road Primary School, where he began his education. He also attended a Chinese school for the other half of the day. He went on to Outram Secondary School and the University of Singapore before joining the Administrative Service. He entered politics in 1984.

Mr Wong's younger sisters went to Methodist Girls' School. One became a nurse, another a legal clerk, and the youngest an accountant. When not at school, they would help out at the noodle stall. To earn extra income, their father would travel around selling sundry goods, cloth and fruits from a tricycle cart. He also helped friends and fellow migrants from his village write letters home.

As Singapore moved towards self-government, the law was changed in 1957 to allow those born here or who had lived here for 10 years to become citizens. Like many of the 220,000 China-born Chinese here, Mr Wong's parents registered as Singapore citizens. This entitled them to vote in the May 1959 elections, which brought the People's Action Party to power.

Mr Wong remembers accompanying his parents to the polling station at his old school and listening to the results over the radio. Many of his classmates had parents who were born elsewhere, but this was never an issue, he recalls. He notes that not many Singaporeans can really claim to have been here for more than five generations.

'Now, we feel foreigners who come here are intruding into our space. But we forget that that's what our parents did before - intruding into the space of those who were here before them. 'We should remember that immigrant children will one day be like us,' he adds.

Mr Wong speaks from experience when he says: 'Many of us are first generation. When you are born here, your friends are here in the same school, with the same language, you will feel Singaporean.'

elections coming ... thats why all telling childhood sad sob stories to gain sympathy votes ... 1st mah, and now WKS ... what next ? raymond lim going to school in trishaw & vowing to become transport minister ? or LHL sacrificing the comforts of sri temasek ? knn ...

immigration in the 1940s when s'pore was mostly covered in jungle and tigers roamed the streets, is different from now that s'pore has become a jungle of another sort - a concrete one where foreign workers roam the streets in swarms ... why can't the PAP get this fact straight ?

the next time a minister or MP say 'but yr ancestors are also immigrants what !'... im gonna virtual slap him/her ...

the new immigrants are unlike those of the past - they come here with deep pockets & pay thru their nose for HDB flats driving up their prices ... esp indonesian PRs have no money sense ...

this is becoz either they think sporns are retard are sporns are retard after all......coz they are still in power election after election

To me, its unbelieveable to think this kind of calibre Minister is paid millions of dollars. Wong Cunt Stink is truly out of touch with the situation on the ground. His parents came here and according to him started their own small business selling noodles and sundry goods on a bike. In other words they did not steal the job of a native born singaporean. The fact that he does not comprehend this simple difference is scary to me. His parents were entreprenuers, they invested their own money, time and sweat in a small legitimate business. They were enterprising people. S'poreans will always welcome these sort of foreigners. But these are not the ones coming now. The ones here now undercut the wages of a native born sinkie and steal their jobs even with inferior qualifications. The entreprenuerial ones are prostitutes or other such illegal activities. Wong Cunt STink needs to wake up his idea, before he tells us the story of his miserable life. The Shit Times should ask him whether his father is proud of him now, screwing over the country that he chose to be his new home.

Mr Wong has not experienced "being crowded" by all the foreigners that are flooding into Singapore, so he is not in a position to make such stupid comments.

Perhaps Mr Wong should leave aside his chauffeur driven limo to work daily, and try taking the bus, train or taxi to work like most peasants (minus police escort and body guards if he dares) and see for himself what's happening. The majority of the crowds, he will discover to his surprise will not be locals, but foreigners that his PAPpy gahmen has let in to "crowd us out" of our spaces.

Wong Cunt Stink also mentioned a few things that his parents did that FTs do not do today:
1) They adapted to life in S'pore by learning Malay and Hokkien. How many FTs can say that? Our useless MM and PM is askign us to adapt to them. Idiots.
2) They brought their entire family. How many FTs have uprooted their family and moved them here? These are fake PRs and have no intention to live here permanently.
3) The law back than was that u have to be born in S'pore or lived here for 10 years before u can become a citizen. WHat happened to that law now, hey Wong Cunt Stink?

Most Australians have ancestors who are criminals but are criminals welcomed with open arms into Australia and to be citizens?

KNN. what a load of crap:mad:

5 generations = about 100 years. 100 years ago spore not even a country ok. WTF!!!

If immigrants cost as much as local sinkies, will WKS still love them????????????

The next story to come up will be the HAIRY story of being captured by the Japanese and was supposedly marked for death but was lucky to have escape and whole load of bullshit continue to the notion of Stinkipores should not rely too much on their colonial masters and should be a independent nation with a hand in deciding the future fate of the nation and whole load of bullshit and right down to nations not mature enough to handle casinos and other vices and will not let his SINGLEHANDEDLY developed nation fall into the hand of half past six opposition. The next PM shall be clean, upright, educated and forgot what other bullshit qualities if nation wants to continue enjoying current luxuries. Such cow dunks spin over and over again and porlumpars actually got the story into BIO channel. That is life for you, CITIZENS!

He will never and will never need to take public transport for the rest of his life, so perish the thought that he will take public transport to understand the concerns of the ordinary singaporean.
Actually some people have the wrong impression that the ministars love foreign talents.
I don't think they do at all.
They simply serve their purpose, which is to help make the country and ultimately themselves richer. It's just like senior management of commercial organizations making the decision to hire workers of all nationalities, for the profitability of the company.
If the ordinary singaporeans here or there find themselves being crowded for space or crowded out of jobs or housing, that's not really their concern or problem.
