Woman wins $410,000 but casino refuses payout

The problem is that the rule book has already clearly stated the max amount of $50,000 before any of the slot machines were allowed to go operational.

However in this case I believe the casino should be penalised for the glitch, no diff from SMRT penalized for pub tpt glitches. Let say they have to pay a fine of $50,000 to casino regulatory authority. Of course, the CRA should also be morally obliged to use these penalties to fund social programmes targetted at problem gambling, but knowing how fucked up and mercenery the govt is, I won't bet on that.

(Its the same way with tobacco tax ... the tax dollars should be channeled to hospitals and healthcare programmes, but the govt instead hoards it for itself and does not return those tax dollars to the citizens...)

If the max payout is the car or $258k, then the slot machine should be programmed to match the max of that and no more.

Once the slot machine showed the winning of $410k, then they should pay accordingly.

MBS may be able to claim the difference from their insurance or machine vendor.

A sad fact but true. World class educated Police cannot even fill up a proper report with pen & paper when computer breakdown, and after kena tekan left right, can't even fill up the report in proper english! How can a pinay & pinoy fill up a proper claim form to claim from insurance or vendor? Of course claim machine malfunction lah! Punters decides to sue will involved God's investment company and god will sent his attack dogs at 2 a.m. to intimidate the poor woman and she will back down & not receive a single cent lah! Mark my words! There will not be any follow up whatsoever on this ever again!

The programmer was from Mumbai, the currency was INR , the winning amount should be INR410,00 = SGD10,368 , to hide their mistakes they offered the car & min house win of S$50,000, she should just settle & go home.

The MBS should manage as you comment anything wrong claim with the vendor/insurance.

the photo can be recover using software. I think the govt will side the casino, because they bring wealth to govt. So, i guess the woman should settle with her lawyers. If it is mechanical fault, she have no case.

Singaporean hawker in casino dispute over jackpot

SINGAPORE : A Singaporean food seller claims a casino is trying to deprive her of her rightful winnings after it said a slot machine jackpot message only popped up because of a glitch, a report said Friday.

Choo Hong Eng, 58, told a local newspaper she was playing the slot machines for the first time Tuesday when the "Cash Bonus" sign appeared indicating she had won more than S$416,000.

She said the manager told her instead of the full jackpot she had won S$50,000 and a sports car worth S$258,962 which she could sell back to the casino for cash.

A spokesman for the Marina Bay Sands casino said: "As this case is the subject of an ongoing investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage."

Choo, who runs a vegetarian food stall, said as well as complaining to the casino she had also made a police report.

"It's a matter of principle. I wouldn't take a single cent more from them, but I wouldn't accept a single cent less either," she told the newspaper, adding that she had not been told when the casino investigation would be completed.

"The other patrons told me not to be taken in. They said there was no indication anywhere that I had won only S$50,000 and a car."

Think she will get the full amount eventually. Very bad reputation of a casino not honoring the payout especially if it's a fault of theirs. Don't think MBS is stupid enough to want this bad publicity of "customer win money can only get partial." There are just too many potential customers out there and what they are doing is to drive their customers to RWS.

Woman fights casino over $416,000 jackpot win
MBS claims glitch in machine, offers her $50,000 and car instead

It was the first time Ms Choo Hong Eng was playing the slot machines at the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) casino on Tuesday, and another casino patron had to show her the ropes.

But less than half an hour and $50 later, the machine seemed to get stuck.

When she turned to her kind fellow gamer for help again, he stared with disbelief at the numbers flickering on her screen: '$416,742.11' and above it 'Cash Bonus'.

BACKGROUND STORY

On her side, Ms Choo has casino patrons who were there with her at 6am, offering to be her witnesses. One of them, Mr Moo Ngow Chai, a 63-year-old Malaysian, said in Mandarin in a telephone interview yesterday: 'I saw what happened and thought it was very unfair of the casino to deny her the winnings. 'The jackpot machine clearly displayed the words 'Cash Bonus'. There were no pictures of a car at all.'

if they go to court and the casino wins, it will set a precedent for casinos to avoid paying out large jackpots by feigning machine malfunction.

Same thinking here, as the casino's reputation is at stake here. Casinos the world over aren't afraid of payouts; they're only afraid if they lose your patronage.

THE HARD TRUTH: MBS knows very well even if they dishonor the payout and dent their reputation, gamblers will still come back. MBS will not close shop because of this little dent in reputation.
In the first place, Casinos are for fools.

If I read it between all the lines. Both the jackpot machine display and Casino is right about the cash but not the car.

The car should cost and can return in cash of $416,742.11 - $50,000 = S$366,742.11.

So, instead of Ferrari, they would only offered this aunty a Mercedes class?!

Jackpot winner's lawyer sends letter to MBS
By Zhao Quan Yin | Posted: 26 October 2011 2215 hrs

SINGAPORE: The lawyer representing a woman embroiled in a dispute concerning a jackpot win has sent a letter to Marina Bay Sands (MBS).

The lawyer said the letter claims that the casino at MBS has not paid 58-year-old Choo Hong Eng her jackpot win of some S$416,000.

She was told that the slot machine had a glitch and that she had instead won S$50,000 and a sports car worth nearly S$260,000 which she could sell back to the casino for cash.

The lawyer sent the letter on Monday, asking the casino to pay the amount Madam Choo claimed she had won.

The letter also asked MBS to respond by Tuesday midnight.

Since then, Madam Choo and her lawyer have not received any response.

They are awaiting the Casino Regulatory Authority's report, due to be out next month, which will indicate if Madam Choo will be paid.

If not, her lawyer said Madam Choo, a vegetarian food stall owner, plans to sue MBS.
