SINGAPORE : A 29-year-old graphic designer was hauled to court on Tuesday for allegedly stabbing a man on the first day of the new year.

Teo Ming Min was charged with one count of voluntarily causing hurt to Kelly Ong Bi Hao after she allegedly stabbed him on his lower chest.

The incident took place on the morning of January 1 at a HDB unit at Bedok North Road.

Ong, who works as a operations coordinator, suffered a two-centimetre wound from the alleged attack.

Channel NewsAsia understands that the two are acquaintances and knew each other through a friend.

SINGAPORE: Gutted that her girlfriend left her for a man, a 29-year-old woman stabbed him in a fit of rage.

Describing it a "crime of passion" in his sentencing, a district judge ordered Teo Ming Min to two years' probation.

Teo, a graphic designer, was found guilty of voluntarily causing hurt to 27-year-old Kelly Ong Bi Hao after she stabbed him three times on 1 January.

On that day, Teo went to visit her 27-year-old girlfriend - Lin Pei Ying - in her HDB unit at Bedok North Road.

The petite woman then spotted Ong coming out of Lin's bedroom.

Agitated, Teo took out a knife from her sling bag and stabbed him repeatedly when he later came out of the toilet.

The court heard that Teo had bought the knife, with a blade measuring 14 centimeters, earlier that morning for "protection."

Ong was stabbed twice in the front and once in the back, before Lin intervened.

He was then brought to hospital where he was treated for stab wounds and had a chest tube inserted.

Teo was arrested at the hospital when she later went to check on him.

In mitigation, Teo's lawyer, Ravinderpal Singh, said that Teo was in a three-year-relationship with her girlfriend - Lin Pei Ying - before Ong came onto the scene.

He argued that Teo was "actually a timid individual" who felt "gutted" after her girlfriend started a relationship with Ong.

The court also heard that since the incident, Teo has been undergoing counselling with her church pastor and medical treatment as well.

In his sentencing, District Judge Ng Peng Hong said that it was an "exceptional case which did not warrant a custodial sentence."

But he chided Teo for her actions, noting that it resulted from "poor anger management skills, poor problem solving skills and poor regard of the law."

He also ordered Teo's parents to post a S$5,000 bond to ensure their daughter's good behaviour.
