No country can ever be self sufficient. Its a delusion. Its always a balance of how much is it worth without killing ourselves. You can refuse to buy uranium but you cannot stop drinking water.

Every country exist on the premise that they have something that the world wants.

I agree that life as a Malaysian chinese isn't so bad. Know a number of Malaysian chinese who turned down job offers from Spore companies because they have heard about the problems working in Spore

If you are hard working you can easily do better than the laid back Malays. That's why many Malay managers are quite happy to hire the chinese Many chinese eventually go solo, setting up their own businesses with their relatives/friends. I notice that the Malaysian chinese are more into networking than their Spore counterparts. This helps them find lobangs.

Had a Malaysian chinese boss while working in a Spore MNC. This boss was very bright & everyday I would hear her talking to her kakis. They keep close touch with each other & help each other out, more than most Sporeans She eventually left to work in HK because of the better prospects. So don't think the Malaysian chinese can't make it

She eventually left to work in HK because of the better prospects. So don't think the Malaysian chinese can't make it

Had a relative who moved with his family from Spore to HK in the 70's. Made his $$$ & then emigrated to Aust. Even had some class mates who went there to make their $, before going to China became fashionable

On my research.
There are 2 agreement/contract.
1st contract 86million gallon/day(already expired)
2nd contract 250million gallon/day( expired in 2061)>>lucky this not expired. If not prepare for water price to be at least $3/1000 litre.
Now Singapore buy raw water at RM0.03/1000 gallon and selling back at RM.0.50/1000gallon.
1000gallon = 3800Litre
Even selling back RM0.50/1000gallon still have profit because sell it to state. No need to lay pipe to resident.
Malaysia sell water to resident from RM0.30 ~$1.50 depending on state and usage. Normally 1st 20,000Litre is less than RM0.50.
Price in RM and contract so cheap because Singapore under Malaysia.

So for raw water cost of filtering the water. I estimate about SG$0.10(or less)/1000 litre
For New Water I estimate cost is SG$0.50/1000litre
For Desalination Water cost is SG$0.70/1000 litre.
The above is water plant cost/1000 litre.

Now PUB-Singapore selling water to resident at SG$1.17/1000 litre not included tax. If included tax will be about $1.52/1000litre for 1st 40,000litre not included GST.
So will estimate the water price will increase by 30% very soon.
New water and Desalination water consume lot of energy. If oil price up cost for water will increase also.

Those numbers do not give a true picture of what may potentially be catastrophic for Newater.

Those high pressure pumps require lots of maitenance not forgetting high energy usage to drive them. And thos microscopic membranes, they cost a bomb and are prone to plugging and fouling. Any one of them not working properly of causes a breakthrough, its not so easy to detect. Not to mention the many thousands of chemicals that we pour down our drains. Does anyone really believe they test for every single one of those chemicals. Its just mindboggling impossible. Just to give an example:

If a car workshop decide to dump coolant that he replaces into the sink, would anybody know? We know it happens cos its impossible for NEA to check everytime we use the sink/toilet. Multiply that with the various activities that goes on daily in Singapore and I start to shudder.
The effects on our children's health will only surface decades later. By then its too late.

Desalination on the other hand costs a bomb to operate because it consumes enormous amounts of energy.

We pay for all these. I'd rather give a little more to Mahathir and retain the threat to strike than drink shitwater and not know how it mutates my sperm. By then the intransigent old man would be dead and there would not be a grave to piss on him.

U seem like someone who knows what they are talking about for newwater. In fact, in almost all countries that use the Newwater style water treatment process, they blend the water with their other supplies, hence watering it down. I am not aware of any place that will bottle the Newwater straight and sell it or give it as drinking water. except in singapore. U are right, there are many undisclosed costs and in addition, the costs will only get higher as the price of energy goes up. Just compare the price of fuel now to what it was last year when I started this thread. I estimated costs to be about Sgd $3 per 1000 gallons, instead of the 50 sen per 1000 gallons we could have been paying.

The other factor is the introduction of almost 2 million FTs into singapore. We could have reduce the number of desalination and new water plants if they were not here. Hence the production costs overall will be less for water. We got PAP MPs sponsoring FT "Water Festivals", limpeh cheebyes.

Over the years I've known many Sporeans, Malaysians, Indonesian, Hongkies leave Spore
Many are comfortably off as they have $$ & skills that are in demand in the 1st world. These are the types of people that make a country. Guess Spore is not big enough for the PAP & "others" to coexist
