A 76-YEAR-OLD man, who was nagged by his wife while she was cleaning the living room of their home in Ranau, Sabah, sulked and refused to climb down from a coconut tree where he had retreated to, Kosmo! reported.
The senior citizen, known only as Salimin, rested for about four hours among the cluster of fronds atop the tree, estimated to be about 9m high, and was taking a nap when firemen came to "rescue" him.
After several failed attempts to persuade him to climb down, the rescuers used a ladder and one of them went up to guide Salimin down.
The drama started at the padi planter's home in Jalan Sinarut Lama at around 8am on Sunday when his wife, Ratini, 70, pestered him to go elsewhere if he just wanted to laze about while she cleaned the living room.
Refusing to prolong the argument, Salimin walked out of the house and went straight to the nearby coconut tree.
His wife, who initially watched him from the house, became frantic when she saw her husband climbing up the tree.
She pleaded with him to climb down but he refused. After three hours of futile persuasion, she called the fire department.
Operations commander Balasius Ampun said when his team arrived at the scene at around noon, Ratini was standing beneath the tree while the husband appeared to be napping.
Neighbours interviewed by the paper said the couple had been married for 50 years and had never quarrelled before. They have several children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
