Why Singaporeans cannot have Tony Tan as President
It looks like Tony Tan may be fielded by the PAP in place of Georgie boy.

Whether it is Tony Tan or Georgie boy, the argument against them becoming the President is same.

Tony Tan has been a core PAP man. He is still a PAP man. So to put Tony Tan as President is to defeat the very purpose of the President which is to check on the PAP regime. You cannot have a core PAP man like Dr Tony Tan to check on his master. No matter how hard he tries, no matter how insincere his attempt, it is just not possible. The simple reason is he will be looking from the same pair of spectacles as the PAP regime. His thinking is the same as them.

So Singaporeans, please don't support Dr Tony Tan as President.

Chose a really independent person like Tan Kin Lian as the President. Tan Kin Lian has indicated that he will only retain about $300,000 of the pay and the balance will go into a fund for charity. He hopes the fund will get public and $ for $ government support. The fund will be less bureaucratic and is to help poor Singaporeans who cannot afford to pay for their medical bills, who cannot afford to pay for their children's education amongst others.

Tan Kin Lian has also proposed to start an annual Presidential Report on Singapore Reserves. This is a very good idea and deserve the whole hearted support of Singaporeans.

Reply: I also agree that the President should be a unifying factor for all Singaporeans. This statement was first made by Dr. Tan Cheng Bock and I am happy to share the same sentiment.


I believe that Singaporeans can be unified by sharing similar values. I want to encourage them to embrace the values of values of honesty, fairness, positive attitude, courage and public service. Many people have told me that they like these values and are happy to support them.


My actions will be guided by these values. For example, I want to be honest and positive in expressing the concerns expressed by many Singaporeans about safeguarding their CPF savings and the reserves of Singapore. I want to help to address their concerns can be addressed in a constructive way. One way is for the President's Office to issue an annual report that the citizens can understand. This will help in the communication and educating the citizens.


I also shared my views about public service - to address the concerns expressed by many Singaporeans about the high salaries earned by the top leaders, including the President. I want them to know that I am not contesting this office for the high remuneration and will be willing to donate a significant part of the President's salary towards charity, if I am elected. (I hope that my personal views on this issue does not cause any discomfort to other government leaders - as I recognise that they have financial needs and priorities that are different from me).


I respect and support the timely action taken by the Prime Minister to set up a review committee to review the salaries of the top leaders and hope that it will, to a large degree, address this concern of the people. I will do my best to get the people to understand and accept the positive actions that are being taken now.


I believe that the people of Singapore will feel engaged, committed and proud to be Singaporeans, if they feel that they have a voice and that it is being heard. I hope that the office of the President can play a part to provide this channel - although I recognise that other channels are also being developed. To support this initiative, I have suggested the concept of the President's personal council - which I will be giving more
thought to in the weeks ahead.

Speak for yourself and don't assume others are of the same mind. Anyone that agrees with you will support what you are contending. There are some who likes him and some who don't which is a fact, but your statement is without any basis unless you have proof.

If you consider him an ideal candidate, you should do your very best to sing out his positive attributes, argue your position and state your case. Do not vote for something out of spite. That sort of behaviour is expected of a child throwing a tantrum.

Those who are against him will not keel over and die if his Photos and that of his wife hangs on the walls of public office. They go away knowing that they did their best, right or wrong. To late to regret if you felt strongly and did nothing and saw the pictures on the wall. The fact that he might win is not a remote possibility and that is why there is comments about him from many fronts.

This is the damage that was done over the last 25 years when the press came under state control. Now the establishment and the State press have realised that they are stuck. It is already a joke that all 3 candidates are PAP chaps. One spoke his mind but within the PAP. One has been speaking as the PAP while the 3rd kept quiet but after making his fortune from the PAP is now a freedom fighter. The first two did not need PAP money. The inability to figure out which is which is a major issue with the voters.

Not sure how far this is true. Need further checks. The fact that TT put his hat in the ring this late is telling. The 6 candidates previously endorsed did not want to contest for various reasons but the fact that they did not want to take on TCB out of respect is a factor. I am sure they are going to get the evil eye from fellow professionals is a factor.
