I notice waiters work for the TIPS in America
But in singapore, restaurant owners add 10% service charge to the total bill..........is this a standard practice ?
Can the tipping culture kick starrt and be sustained in Singapore ?
I be happy to give tips to the waiter who give good attentive services ........ !'fraid not.....too many giam gu in SG liao...
Why shd i tip the waiter if ....... the restaurant automatically charges additional 10% on my dinning bill ?i'd support the tipping culture. the extra 10% service charge should be removed.

That why the restaurant must segment the sitting. Who ever goes to his zone , he must serve. So ...... no chance of choosing customer !Tipping encourages discrimination in service rendered. A big-tipper would get a better service, at the expense of less-tipper may I add, cause most waiting staff would spend more time and effort on the big-tipper. That said, I agree that this applies to known big-tipping repeat customers only.
What about a situation of all first-timers? The waiting staff would have no idea who's going to tip more. That's even worse. They'll judge you by your clothes and bearing. A badly dressed rugged man won't be served properly even if he has more than enough in his pocket to pay the bill and tip generously.
Tipping as a culture in the US is inherent from the tax system. Salaries are taxed whereas tips are tax-free. So, lower the salary and encourage tipping. In countries like Singapore, if you work as a waiting staff, you're not in the tax bracket anyway.

I ou are so wrong. You obviously never work in such an environment.
Do you noticed that first world countries have waiters in their 50s and 60s? Here in peesai, boat quay hires cheap Nepalese waitress.
The tipping culture in the west weeds out the people with bad service from the people that gives good service.

In the west waitresses are mature enough and smart enough to know that anyone is a potential tipper.
I have worked in a roadhouse type bar in Alberta, the waitresses are much more professional than 5 star hotel waitresses in peesai.
i agree! SGers don't know what is service. and most SG waiters/tress have low IQ. those in the west will surprise you with their wisecracks and out of box thinking, plus initiative on the job.
this is the good result of tipping. only the good service people survive.
