Why socialism and communism does not work.

1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

1. No such thing. The poor is still the poor. The rich is still the rich. Anyone who claims otherwise is a liar.

2. If one is receiving more than his share for what he works, by giving back a part of what he receives, he is receiving what he works. He owes nobody and nobody owes him.

3. Yes. But what's wrong with that. Isn't this happening all the time?

4. Wealth is already distributed. It is a matter how this should be distributed.

5. This only happens when you apply an extreme condition where everybody gets an equal share. For all other situations where the harder or better worker receives more, this will not happen even if the gap in relative compensation is reduced. Less work, you get less.

I applaud your act. We need more of such deeds.

Compassion has to be a personal quality not a government policy. You cannot legislate compassion.

I am 100% against any form of social welfare. However, that does not mean I am not compassionate. I support my disadvantaged friends quietly usually without them knowing it.

For example there is a cyclist in our group who can no longer work because he suffered from a brain injury as a result of being knocked off his bike. He recovered but he's never going to be 100%. He still rides with us regularly but he can no longer race and I learned he had difficulty with the cost of maintaining a bike.

To help him out, I quietly told the bike shop to bill him 10% of the cost of repairs and send the bill for the balance of 90% to me so when he needs $200 worth of repairs and spare parts, he only pays $20 and I pay $180. However, he is not aware of this which is the way I want it.

The owner of the bike shop found out about this arrangement recently and chipped in and waived all labour charges so everyone is a winner.

That is what compassion is all about. It's from one human to another. Forcing me to pay high taxes in order to feed some lazy bastard who can't be bothered to work is not compassion. It's daylight robbery.

If we all play our part in our own way, mankind will be better off. We don't need governments to get involved.

How do you help your fellow human beings?

Agree.

If you people have time and I believe most of you do, download the financial reports from the websites of famous charities, and look at the percentage per dollar that goes to the end charity. You don't have to read the whole few hundred pages of the report, just skip to the page where they show how much goes to the final recipient. Most of the time, you will be shocked that their "overheads" are taking most of the money.

Now, if you cannot even find the financial report from a charity, I would not even recommend that you donate to them. Then again, I have stopped long ago when I started looking into the reports.

Don't do that. 80% of your sponsorship goes to the organisation's overheads including the highly paid CEO. Organised charity is a big scam. Surely we all remember TT Durai.

Charity begins at home and it starts with those you know who need help.

He is lucky to have a stupid guy like Sam to take over the task of the Govt otherwise he will suffer greatly. This is clearly a job too big for everybody except the Govt to undertake. Moreover you need to change the behaviour of just one party, i.e. the Govt, and not everybody. These acts of personal compassion should be treated as bonuses. Anyway, the best way to promote compassion is to show by example - from the Govt.

1. Agree that human beings should be directly compassionate to others. Don't go through a middleman (or organization) and don't expect legislation to do it for you.

2. Governments need to understand that their primary objective it to make the lives of ordinary citizens better. And not just an elite few or their favourite people.

3. If only the pappies would learn to ask that question "How do you help your fellow human beings?" instead of asking "Who are your parents and what do they do?" Yes, yes, we understand that this is an inherited trait and the questions asked are also inherited, but still, it's disgusting.

Disagree.

The govt should be a mirror of the people and not the other way around. Compassion if served by the people and becomes and primary nature amongst each another will force the govt to do so.

To expect a govt to be compassionate by itself is an impossible task since it was never part of their KPI.

How do you know what the rich are doing with their money. Many could be quietly going about the business of helping others without making a big song and dance of the fact.

The Asian rich are different. They are showboats. There is a significant collection in Singapore itself, ranging from the chicken rice seller who spoke to the media about donating 10Grand to Huang Na's mum (the mum of the 8yo who was raped and killed in 2007), and the guy who had a hospital named after him because of his very public donation. The list is in fact very extensive.

Oddly.. this professors explanation does not explain the state of India.. the worlds largest democracy or is that due to the nature of capitalism they are in?

This is one reason why communism do not work.

1. Human compassion & dignity marks the difference between human civilisation and the jungle.

Sad to say, you're talking about a fantasy world. Governments routinely send men to die just to secure a trading route or gain a geopolitical advantage. I'm not talking about 5 centuries ago, but right now.

Actually, there are a few types
- showboat as you aptly describe. donate small talk big
- the stealth types, they donate quietly due to many reason (and I suspect many due to guilt in their older years on how they made the money)
- the agreeable type. You just have to ask and tell them that you need money and they will sign you a check right away. They know they have too much of it anyway and what they sign off is a "peanut" anyway.
- the help the inner circle type. Will literally help their inner circle or workers pay off their houses, cars, debts etc for nothing other than a thank you

amongst many others.. and again yes, these are in Singapore whom I have had the chance to meet and talk with. Most at their older years know they cannot bring the money with them in the next big step...

Agreed
/signed :p

Its about education and moral.
Compassion changed the world just that you don't record it.
Wars destroys.

Did China's last change from communism to a more liberal mode because of real war or because of piracy/trade/modernisation forced the leaders to be more moral minded ?

You people are dreamers. Even within the small team comprising the cabinet members, we cannot modify behavior, how can we expect to change the behavior of 5.4 million? That is why such schemes as self-help, private contribution into charities and personal compassion efforts leave a safety net, if any, with lots of holes.

Disagreed.

Human development has a part of compassion.
How did we get primitive medicines without compassion?
Without compassion in human development, our present world should be ended long long ago... by many great wars, diseases, disasters...

Compassion has never played a part in human development. 99% of all human progress is driven by war.

I'll say this as politely as possible.... that's probably the worst way to help the needy. All churches take care of themselves first. Look at the standard of living of your Pastor, his boss and his boss's boss. Church donations often support the whole family... pastor, wife, 3 kids etc. I've never seen a pastor living in a cheap part of town. They lead comfortable lives and you're paying for it either directly or indirectly

For every $100 you donate to the church, less than $10 reaches the orphan of your choice.

Which shows the government is doing a pretty decent job.

The young don't learn from legislation. They learn from the example set by their parents. A kid of some rich prick isn't going to become charitable just because there's a tax law that redistributes wealth. If his parents ill treat their maids in front of him and speak in derogatory terms about those who are less fortunate, the kid will grow up thinking exactly the same way.

Ha ha ha ha, that's what I thought too
