Why so many Americans voted for Trump even though he wanted to impose import taxes ?

To answer the topic's question, let's use a simple analogy - a manufactured screw driver:-

USA has all the mineral resources it needs to produce products for consumers, more so for its own citizens.

The USA manufactured screw driver would cost only mere 20cts based upon material costs alone, but sold at USD$1 each. That other 70cts is to cover workers' salaries, factory space, overheads, marketing as well discounts to distributors.

USA is a population of 300million & the screw driver is a basic essential tool used in every household, thus with population growth, that mere tool would generate millions annually. It is just one tool, amongst many MANY more other tools.

China, while may not be as resource rich as USA, can easily make the same tool, with far lower overheads - cheap labor sweat shops, boundless factory spaces, etc with even well known cutting corners, & dump such products into USA at 70cts.

As such, the USA manufacturer of screw drivers will have to close shop as no American will buy its $1 product, leading to a cascading effort of retrenchments not just at the manufacturing plant, but even to USA supply chains, even right down to the mom & pop shops or restaurants as most would be out of jobs to afford anything.....

Thus there is a need for protectionism, to protect a nation's employment & economy. With a rather small tariff of 70% on the sale of one China made screw driver, it will cost an American to buy it at $1.20cts, compared to a USA made that cost $1. One can only get rich by saving & smart expenditure, thus with such a move to buy American, it will save American jobs, employment & economy.

Should Americans still insist on buying poorly made China goods, which looks good but will not last, even their EV cars, each 50cts of Tariff will go into USA Treasury to fund social expenditure, such as health, education, infrastructure, etc...

Thus, it proves 50.7% - 73 million +American voters were not foolish whom voted for Mr Trump, among many other promises he made to the voters to make America great again, against the other 47%.....

It is an understandable example. But in econs there is called a comparative advantage. USA should focus on areas they are good at and China as well. Then they trade.
If not, Sinkapore is a doomed case... no hard resources, no size, 60% are duds...

The insignificant nobody me do agree with your statement, except sadly for the part about '60% are duds' and all else after that....

Singapore is NOT resource rich like USA or labor rich like China, but the so called 'comparative edge' that we Singaporeans do posses is our LOCATION - a focal point for TRADE where all points of the compass meet for TRANSITION of cargos.

No matter what happens in the World, TRADE- which is the lifeblood of Civilizations- WILL still be needed & thus our survival - thru efficient services from port to supply chains - finance, wharehousing, FTA, Treaties signed, etc, & such WILL ensure our citizens' survival & economy thru such revenues created to fund social expenditures such as health, education, infrastructure, etc.

We Singaporeans, stand ready to help anyone whom believes & support in the Rule of Law, peace & trade.

Precisely without which these 60% duds are doomed.

During the election campaign, Trump, who just won a second term as US president, vowed to slap tariffs of up to 60 per cent on Chinese imports and at least 10 per cent on goods from all other countries.

Trump say IF want to avoid tariffs, setup factory in USA & nothing will be impose
But think again, once setup factory, kena their Labor Union, their Environment Activist, their Diversity panel
Enough to suck off all the profits, make America Great again, but no profit to foreign factory owner.
ask TSMC, ask Samsung  all tio smoked gao gao

Do think again, more times if necessary....

Who benefits most - the FOREIGN factory owner or CIVILIZED American manufacturing owners on American soil & their supply chains?

Are Unions or Tripartite orgs that bad?

OR do they at the least do have productivity in mind - to get the best out of workers than factory owners whom would be ready with whips & chains to MAXIMIZE every single minute of hours spent - for their own profits and NOT for the betterment of workers as happened to industries in the 18th century where even kids were exploited for owner's profits- local or foreign, & in modern times found in China & totalitarian ruled nations 24/7 sweat shops?

Profits is comprehensible as no biz enterprise is a charity org. However, NO mortal is a robot, but only flesh & blood Humans, with needs. Thus there is a need to BALANCE profits & needs of Human workforce for viable sustainability for long term survival of both Humankind & biz enterprises....

Sinkieland is a totalitarian regime, no term limits, no checks and balances, media is basically the mouthpiece of the regime, kangaroo courts dispense fraudulent justice.

Please don't compare the shithole island to a civilized country.

And if you dislike 'angmoh' countries for whatever reason, you can refer to South Korea, Japan and Taiwan.
