Table Tennis: 90% of the world's population have no interest in it so highest chance of olympic medal.

Why dont they try the 100m; 200m or 400m sprint? Lets see if our world most expensive minsters can bring back gold?

You people still don't get the point. Singapore is too small to have a pool of potential world-class talents to choose from. That's why we have to tap on the really talented pool of players outside this small island.

hahahahah. Youre a real hermit wallowing in your own dung.
New Zealand's population is slightly smaller than Spore & yet they can reach the World Cup TWICE with home grown players.
So what the fish youre talking about Spore with a small pool?

the way the government do it is wrong, they are like Real Madrid, they wanna buy success, in pursuit of results, they choose the shortest and most direct way, buy talents. But because the rules don't allow them to buy established players that have already represented their country, they bring them in young with potential and train them, these players do nothing but training and given relatively high pay (for doing nothing but play ping pong day in day out). Now they won the medal - everyone in the government come out to say good things and bask in glory.

local players? You start off joining school team, represent school team..ok, you are good, you get selected and go through a special program to groom you at may 9,10 or 12...you train intensively but not full-time, you have to balance your schoolwork which also demand your attention. You have to cope with exams, you hve to cope with demands of making the grade in both school work and playing. Do this to a young kid, does he have the capacity and maturity to do this? Ok, so you make it to the national team or national junior team, you face against these Chinese or whatever imports who train more than you. You probably don't make the grade, you end up as a sandbag, a sparring partner..

You start to think...a sportman's playing career is short. A few years past, you are 40, then what? Maybe you have the qualifications but you don't have the neccessary work experience - you cannot get a decent job outside. There aren't that large numbers of table tennis coaches needed. There isn't a professional league here in Singapore where you can go into management. China, Japan, or Korea - they have an established system, they don't need you.

You shudder at the thought, your parents thought of this, and then they jack you out of the system and ask you to concentrate on studying and not playing ping pong.

Just because Dai Yang Tian looks good in that ping pong show doesn't mean ping pong players make it good. All the worse for local breed players...u are no fight against FTs who do nothing by train and get paid.

You have this non-existant infrastructure - how you expect Singaporeans to feel proud that we won? In fact, I don't give a hoot...I don't feel happy at all. I rather we don't participate.

Clap! Clap! Clap! Well said!
Im surprised why our cabinet ministers are all locals. They shouldve imported or buy immediate talents so they world will sit up & see that Spore is a global player. One such person is George Bush. He's definetely cheaper going by our standards.
Sports is such a sham in Spore. What's the point of being 1st in this sports or that sports but achieved by non Sporean?

Still don't get it? Still thinking that our government is not giving enough opportunity for the locally-born youngsters? I suggest you better start playing in more local competitions now and watch more international tournaments to really understand the reality of the table tennis scene.

If you people were to keep whining and making incendiary remarks, it will only breed the feeling of unwelcomeness to our China-born talents. If they feel unwelcome, you cannot blame them when they leave this small island for a greener pasture.

All these arguments can go on and on but at the end of the day, put yourself in the shoes of these China-born sportsmen and sportswomen.

Of course there are also the black sheeps among the foreign sports talents, just like some of the envious whining Singaporeans.

I am very seldom rude to fellow forumers

WHO GIVES A FUCK WHETHER WE WIN THE WORLD TITLE (ANYWAY ITS KELONG)

case in contention is when Datok LEE CHONG WEI, a born & bred Msian lost to PRC Lin Dan in the badminton finals Olympic gold quest . never mind he got the silver but the country was more to be proud of him for participating & making it to the finals. Winning was a bonus. Can Spore say the same of our TT players?

You dumb fuck! How stupid can you be? If you cannot understand simple English then you should not be posting.

Read this - WHO GIVES A FUCK ABOUT MEDALS IF IT IS NOT WON BUT A BORN AND BRED, TRUE FUCKING BLUE SINGAPOREAN?

You're so fucking thick it's not even funny enough. You should be shot, revived and then shot again.

Since you are the one who started to resort to name-callings, then there is no need for me to show you any respect.

FUCK YOU and your ballsless character, you shallow myopic dickhead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a bigger picture behind all these foreign sports talent scheme and if you are not capable of discussing a controversial issue in an intellectual manner, then continue to behave like a prick-headed whiner.

This is why I always think that a forum like this is not a desirable platform for "agreeing to disagree" but more like a place for like-minded people to reinforce one another's opinion and whine and whine and whine non-stop. At the end of the day, it gives the impression that the whole Singapore is supporting your view but in fact, only people who share your view dare to post. After all, it is not difficult to create many nicknames under the same person to propagate a socially self-destructing view.

These can go on and on and therefore I shall not want to waste my time to view this thread and then continue to speak my view with people who do not have the maturity to "agree to disagree".

Have fun to continue reinforcing one another's tinted myopic view. Hahahahaha............

may I ask what is the bigger picture behind all these foreign sports talent scheme, how all those winner medals do any good for Singapore. Can the medals raise our GDP, reduce unemployment rates or is it just for materialistic feel.
