after ww2, the South China Sea was supposed to be China postwar rewards as one of the victorious big 4 allied powers and compensation for their huge Manchuria losses caused by USA and Soviet Union. PRC victory in China 1949 changed everything. the legendary KMT general Xue Yue was appointed to lead the ROC troops to help the USA army in their occupation of Japan. it is said the Japanese leaders begged the Americans not to send the Chinese troops to Japan. meanwhile the Chinese civil war escalated rapidly. Xue Yue and his army were needed to fight the CCP armies, his Japan plan was cancelled.
