I can understand chinatown in san francisco or london or new york.
There is no chinatown in Hong kong, shanghai or Beijing.

You have to ask the British They created it when they were occupying Singapore so that they can have a taste of Chinese cuisine.

The only chinese food served in the UK is fried rice from the takeaway shops.

Sinkapor wasn't a Chinese city by origin in the 1st place unlike Hong Kong or Taipei!

Proven that m&ds are stupid.

Why wld there be a Chinatown in China?

Like Why no Little India in India?

See... it was a Hokkien arsehole from Taiwan who started a first Chinatown in Baguio Philippine.

there was never a chinatown to begin with ,

there are 3 ancient mosques and 2 ancient Hindu temples within, but how many chinese temples that are ancient within our so called chinatown ?

moreover, some of the street names were and are Indians

so, how can you call such a vicinity ,a chinatown?

Back in the day, newly arrived Chinese people were far away from home and found comfort in settling among their fellow kind. Chinese shops, temples and schools clustered around the same area.

It's the same everywhere, from San Francisco to Bangkok.

Are you really so ignorant (read: goondu) of the different race demographics?

Sinkapor's Chinatown was known as 牛车水 in the beginning which mean "ox cart water" being translated. Main reason it's called Chinatown I reckon is because it had a large population of migrants back than from Guangzhou n Xiamen who congregated or lived there..

It's just like GH (General Hospital) was known as "Si Pai Por" in the olden days.. True blue Sinkies who grew up in Sinkapor in the 60s to 70s will definitely know.

the thread is getting interesting ,a good source of info is within the contents of books called the 100 yesrs history of singapore ,written and published way before LKY was born ,1910 or somewhere

I cannot recall javing read a vicinity called chinatown in those books , so when and who established a chinatown in Sinkiland,

the towns were 2 ,one existed before the British arrived, centred around the Kallang River mouth ,where the palace was as well as all trades too

In competition ,the British established another townwship around thr singapore river mouth ,where our current township currently is

but our so called chinatown is actually the outskirts surrounding he British township, such as the Chulia street and Telok Ayer street ,FYI Chulia means Indian Muslims, and it's these folks who had established 3 mosques right in the centre of our so called chinatown ....and telok ayer street is where all our shipping companies were in those days

and what more the streets names around our Maxwell road area still are Indian, denoting from the lands where these Indians came from ....and how many of you know there existed a 4 storey Tamil secondary school exactly opposite to the Maxwell House office building ? ,now why would Tamils woukd build a school in chinatown?

and just opposite to Perals centre ,there still is a hindu Temple and not to forget the oldest Hindu temple built in Sinkiland is just a stone throw away from there

I had seen ,these 2 holy places for Hindus and Muslims in almost all the post cards printed before 1912 for tourists visiting singapore ,...there were chinese Trishaw pullers on the street seen but nothing else were chinese as seen on such post cards

by looking at the facts, I seriously doubt we had such a place as a chinatown here
