Why har? The chinese translation of it seems to be a bit strange, considering that it's location is in Little India.

Any bros here have a better a better explanation for why it is called that?

I was right. From wiki:

In Hokkien, the market was known as Tek Kia Kha, literally meaning "foot of the small bamboos", as bamboo plants once grew on the banks of the Rochor Canal. This was adapted into the popular name Tekka Pasar (笛卡巴刹), where pasar is Malay for "market".
The original market was built in 1915, and was located across the street between Hastings Road and Sungei Road. When it was torn down in 1982 and relocated at its present site, the new multi-use complex was named Zhujiao Centre (竹脚中心), the pinyin version of Tek Kia. However, to locals, especially non-Chinese, the new word Zhujiao was both hard to read and pronounce and bore no resemblance to Tekka. Eventually, the complex was officially renamed Tekka Centre in 2000 as it better reflected the history of the place. The market was closed for a significant renovation in 2008, reopening in 2009.
Little India's first air-conditioned mall, Tekka Mall (later renamed The Verge), was built on the original site of the market in 2003.

The areas named -ka are all related to trees. Mangkaka from jackfruit. Kinjioka from banana. Tekka from bamboo.

wah leow.. everyone knows chinese name of tekka is "竹脚".. I just made a guess and verified later.

This one you all know. But few know original Malay name is Kandang Kerbau meaning where buffalo lived. That why the hospital there is called KK Hospital and the HDB estate there is called Buffalo Road.

Err....Kandang in Malay means enclosure (pen) where the cows/goats are kept, not where cows live. Can be water buffalo or cows but I believe cows as in old Singapore we had a lot of cows but not water buffaloes.

One of my workers was sick at work. She didn't want to see the doctor so I offered to get her a cab. Ask where she lived and she says "Kandang Kerbau". Paid fares in advance and told cab the destination. When she turn up for work asked her if the taxi followed my instructions. She wasn't happy as the taxi took her straight to Kandang Kerbau Hospital.

Kandang Kerbau Hospital (now called KK) holds the record for the world's most births in Guinness Book of records when it was first published. So baby boomers will tell you proudly they are born in KK. This is where women shared the pains of child births. Of all the 4 races (we used to see ourselves as Malays, Chinese, Indians, Eurasians and others then), my mother would remark about Indian women as "small babies, loudest noise" as they are least tolerant to pain and would eat little so babies come out smaller.

Nowadays, young women preferred personal attention and preferred brand names like "Mount E", "Geneagles" to give births. These silly cows do not want Kandang Kerbau. They also do not want to know the most dangerous time of our lives is when we are born (that is why insurers do not cover for pregnancy). A stay at ICU in Mount E costs more than 14K a day. And you just cannot suka suka discharge and checked the premature babe into KK.

In the early years, many Indians keeps cows to milk them and sell the milk to residents door-to-door. Some residents will also buy manure from them as well as allow them to eat the lawn grass in their garden. When they do that they also will drop their dung which fertilize the ground.

Then there are some that have huge Brahmin bulls that pull their bullock carts. The cart is filled to the brim with household items, such as pots and pans. pails, brooms, you named it they got it. I recall seeing a similar one when driving towards Port Dickson Malaysia. They have a real life display at the Malacca National Park.

There were buffaloes in Singapore, Tekka, Kandang Kerbau, Buffalo Road and even the bullock cart referred to in Chinatown Kreta Ayer referred to buffalo, not ox. Since when were there any ox, bull, cow or cattle native in Singapore? They were imported. Buffalo was the native here, but extinct now.
