2 jailed for assaulting golfers
May 5, 2010

TWO men were jailed on Wednesday after they had been found guilty of assaulting two golfers at Singapore Island Country Club last year.

Vikneswaran Ruvy, 21, then a delivery attendant, had used a golf club to hit the back of Mr Robert Tan Sin Chuan's head at the country club in Sime Road on Feb 1 last year.

For this, he was jailed for 15 months and ordered to be given three strokes. He was also given a consecutive six weeks' jail in an unrelated case of pulling the hair of 22-year-old security officer Gunavathi Punniyamoorthy, at East Meadows Condominium last Dec 11.

Part-time mover Vinodh Raveendran, 25, was convicted and jailed for three months for kicking the back of Mr Tan, 53, a branding consultant, that morning. Vikneswaran was also found guilty of punching the face of another golfer Lawrence Loh, now 61, who had asked them to leave. Mr Loh, an executive vice-president (Display Advertisements) in the marketing division of Singapore Press Holdings, was playing golf with Mr Tan and two others when the attack took place.

He told the court he was the first person to make his way to the tee-box when he saw three youths lying on the grass patch. He told them to leave as it was 'very dangerous to lie there', but the trio started to mimic him. When Mr Loh told them that that was a private club, the trio again parroted him. Subsequently, he raised his voice and told them to get out. All then pounced on him and he was punched in his face

He then saw another five youths joining in and 'all hell broke loose'. All sorts of things were hurled at him and his friends. The assault only stopped only when Mr Tan collapsed to the ground after Vikneswaran had hit him on the back of his head with the golf club.

Why is this a jaik & caning affair

Last time when someone was attacked at a food court by a gang it was treated as a civil matter by the police.

Maybe it's because it involved golfers?

Golf clubs can be deadly weapons but it is the non-golfers who are being caned & jail.

The golfers must have some connection to the elites

Should be because weapon was used (golf club) and injury was serious (or grievous in legal terms). Could also be classified under rioting as there were more than 5 assilants eventually.

So how many of those armed with golf clubs were jailed & caned

From the reports its only the defenceless non-golfers who were jailed & caned & none of the golfers

The non golfers got what they deserved, perhaps even less than what they deserved.
They were where they shouldn't have been, they were mischievous, and they were the ones who perpetuated the violence.
Based on the report, the golfers only asked them to leave and it was the non golfers who used the golf clubs as weapons.
Have no idea whether the golfers know the elites, but this case could have been dealt with promptly because the elites also play golf.

........

Isn't it a case of one parties word over another:confused:
How come the other parties version of what happened isn't reported?
We all know how 'reliable' the local media can be, so its hard to believe that a jailable/caneable took place.

As others have shared, the boundaries of the golf course & Macritchie are not clearly marked. How many in this forum would start hitting a buch of 50 year olds armed with golf clubs over being told to move on because its dangerous

It pretty much depends on how the victims are, only upper class people have the right to make a police report with a follow up police action. Little ordinary people like me lan lan have to take up krav maga to kick ass back when assaulted, as if the mata gives a flying fuck about me being whacked to death :D

From the reports it would appear that the golfers are "innocent' victims but they are obviously elites. How many lesser mortals would be playing golf at the Island Country Club?

Elites are used to ordering people around. In this case they chose the wrong people to order around. So the system has to step in to teach these "lesser mortal' their place in Spore society

Quite so, after all isn't this what the 'system' is all about? Putting lesser mortals like you and me in our place and learn it with a slap or two on our cheeks.

To me this case highlights the gap between the elites & lesser mortals.

When you start caneing/jailing people for disagreements when elites are involved, while treating assaults on 'lesser mortals' as civil cases. It highlights that the 'system' in Spore is now broken. It's slanted too far in favour of the Lee's, crony, foreigners.

I'm concerned that the Spore system may not protect Sporeans in their own country, when you come up against elites/foreigners.

What Singaporean System? Its the new order of the People's Democratic Republic of Chinapore :D

Its based on this principle 一国两制, One for the haves and one for the have-nots :D

I think the judge also took into account the defendent's previous convictions. Seriously, if I am a middle aged golfer I would not take on a mama gang in a fight. So it's quite a no brainer who threw the first punch.

Those mamak also 烂命一条 so it doesn't really matter who they hit so long as they feel like it. Going to jail is probably like taking a stroll in a park for them :D

It's really sad that the 66% has allowed Spore to become LKYs playground. Maybe the new foreigners will do a better job.

They will have everything save strong alcohol and wives to beat up :D

Alcohol they can brew with fruit and bread. Wives and girlfriends they can get to know new ones in the shower. No problem at all.
