Australian forward Josh Kennedy (L) celebrates afetr scoring against Danemark during their friendly football match at Ruimsig stadium in Roodepoort, on June 01 2010.

710x.jpg

Giant striker Josh Kennedy continued his remarkable scoring rate for Australia to give manager Pim Verbeek a pleasant selection dilemma ahead of the World Cup as the Socceroos beat Denmark 1-0 in their first warm-up friendly in South Africa.

The match appeared to be heading for a 0-0 draw at Ruimsig Stadium on the outskirts of Johannesburg until Kennedy took full advantage of a slice of luck for the Aussies in the 71st minute to score his seventh goal in just 18 appearances for the Socceroos.

Kennedy was playing as Australia's sole striker under Verbeek's preferred 4-5-1 system but it is a position he is only likely to have during the World Cup should Verbeek's favoured striker, Harry Kewell, not be fit.

But while Kewell - who is expected to rejoin full training with his team-mates in South Africa on Thursday as his injured groin continues to improve - is expected to be fit for Australia's opening World Cup game against Germany in just under a fortnight, Kennedy again showed he is ready to step into the breach should Kewell either not be ready or suffer another injury setback.

Kennedy again demonstrated throughout a match of few chances that he is a solid target man as he took full advantage of a deflected cross from Luke Wilkshire with just under 20 minutes remaining.

As a result of the deflection the ball looped up in the air between two Danish defenders and landed perfectly for the Japan-based striker to tap home from close range.

Verbeek made five changes from the starting line-up that struggled to beat lowly New Zealand with the Socceroos at full-strength other than Kewell and Brett Emerton, who is still recovering from a calf strain.

Number one goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, experienced defenders Wilkshire and Scott Chipperfield as well as Richard Garcia and Kennedy all returned from injury as Adam Federici, Mark Milligan, David Carney, Dario Vidosic and the axed Scott McDonald were the players to make way from the team that started against the All Whites.

The Danes elected not to start their two best strikers in Arsenal star Nicklas Bendtner, who is recovering from a groin injury, and Soren Larsen - who was their leading goalscorer during qualifying for the World Cup, although he did come on in the second half.

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) — Four different players scored Tuesday as the Netherlands showed off its attacking prowess with a 4-1 win over Ghana in a World Cup warmup.

Dirk Kuyt scored in the first half before Rafael van der Vaart, Wesley Sneijder and Robin van Persie added goals in the last 20 minutes. Van Persie completed the rout with an 87th-minute penalty.
Van Persie is now tied with Dutch legends Ruud Gullit and Johan Neeskens on 17 international goals.

Asamoah Gyan scored Ghana's only goal when he capitalized on shaky defending to make it 2-1 in the 78th.
"Our play was very good," Netherlands captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst said. "We were very dangerous on the counter in the second half. We were good on the ball and scored some good goals."

Sneijder set up the Dutch goal on the half hour with a defense-splitting ball to Van Persie that was a near replica of the pass that set Diego Milito free for his first goal for Inter Milan in the Champions League final. Van Persie's low shot was saved by Richard Kingson but Kuyt was on hand to tap in the rebound for his 15th international goal.

The pass was a relief for Sneijder who appeared to struggle early while playing his first match with the much-criticized World Cup ball.
Mark van Bommel, like Sneijder playing his first match since the Champions League final, set up the second Dutch goal with a pass through the Ghana defense that Van der Vaart calmly slid under Kingson.
"You are never happy if you are not in the starting lineup," said Van der Vaart. "It always nice to come in to score a goal. I am happy."

Ghana, playing without injured Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien, rarely threatened and it took a mix-up in the Netherlands defense by Van Bronckhorst and Joris Mathijsen to gift Gyan his goal.

"The goal was a shame. We hardly gave them a chance tonight," Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk said. "This was just a communication problem."

But Ghana's joy was short-lived with Sneijder drilling a long-range, low volley past Kingson to make it 3-1. Sneijder's goal came from a corner Van der Vaart earned when his lob from close to the halfway line forced Kingson to back pedal fast to tip the ball over the bar.

World Cup finalists misfire
June 2, 2010
Honduras still appear to have plenty of work left to do in the final days before the World Cup as they were held to a goalless draw by 10-man Azerbaijan in Austria.
Wayward shooting meant Honduras never really tested Azerbaijan goalkeeper Salahat Agayev, even after the 73rd-minute dismissal of Sasa Yunisoglu for a rash tackle.

Ramon Nunez was the only Honduras player who managed to force a save in the entire match, but his left-footed shot from the edge of the area was easy enough for the goalkeeper.

Honduras will face Chile, Spain and Switzerland in Group H.

Paraguay 2 Greece 0
Jun 03, 2010
Paraguay sealed a morale-boosting 2-0 victory over Greece as the two World Cup finalists clashed in Switzerland for their last warm-up game before flying to South Africa.

The Greek defence was in total disarray in the opening exchanges and Paraguay took the lead in the ninth minute, Enrique Vera tapping gleefully home after Roque Santa Cruz's shot came back off the post.

Lucas Barrios made it 2-0 in the 25th minute after Santa Cruz's header was well saved.

Otto Rehhagel's Greece team struggled and their play was characterised by wayward passing, poor movement and a lack of creativity. TELEGRAPH
