A red Porsche Macan allowed to enter

10.50pm: Langgak Duta - A red Porsche Macan with heavily tinted windows attempts to enter the cordoned-off road leading to Najib's house.

A police officer asks for the windows to be rolled down several times before the person in the car does so. Even then, the window is only rolled down a little.

Locksmiths exit Najib's home

10.05pm: Langgak Duta - Another locksmith has exited Najib's house, armed with what appears to be an electric plasma cutter.

Questioned about his role and whether they managed to crack open the safe, the man merely shook his head.

Further questions of similar nature yielded a simple “I don’t know”.

The man got into a car, and another younger man wearing a shirt bearing the words “professional locksmith” also entered the car.

As they drove off, five cars, several of which were the police vehicles, drove out of the cordoned off area accompanied by an outrider.

Shortly after the cars left, about three clearly marked police cars entered the cordoned off area separately, a few minutes apart.

Najib returns after breaking fast with mother

9.30pm: Langgak Duta - Najib Abdul Razak has just returned home after breaking fast with his mother Rahah Mohammad Noah in her house at Jalan Eaton, Kuala Lumpur.

A picture of him with his mother was just uploaded onto social media.

According to a source close to the former prime minister, Najib’s mother has apparently expressed distress over the raid on her son's house late last night and is concerned for the family, in particular, about her grandchildren and great-grandson.

However, Najib had supposedly reassured her that he had tried to do his best for the country.

Both of them agreed that Najib needed to stay strong to face this “test from God”.

Locksmiths fail to open safe in Najib's residence

7.30pm: Langgak Duta - Two men wearing waistcoats that indicate they are locksmiths walk out of Najib’s private home but decline to provide their names.

Hasnal previously represented Special Action Unit Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar, who was given the death sentence for the murder of Mongolian translator Altantuya Shaariibuu.

The lawyer and his son ignore questions from the press.

Moments before their arrival, a gold Mercedes Benz believed to be ferrying another lawyer, Harpal Singh Grewal, departs from the house only to turn back less than five minutes later.

Thus far, several police cars have come in and out of the road leading to Najib’s residence.

Curious onlookers have also been dropping by the scene to get a glimpse of Najib’s sprawling mansion.

Malay-language daily Berita Harian previously reported that Nazri had entered Najib’s house.

Since about 10am, police have allowed a flurry of cars to drive in and out of the house.

“As former victims of early dawn police raids, I must stress my disagreement in ransacking any home at such an ungodly hour.

“Charge, investigate, prudently... Prinsip keadilan & berhikmah sentiasa terpakai (the principle of justice and wisdom should be followed),” she tweets, while tagging the official Twitter account of the Royal Malaysian Police.

Nurul Izzah’s father and PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim had in 1998 been subjected to an early morning raid by balaclava-clad commandos prior to being convicted for his Sodomy I charge.

12.50pm: Langgak Duta - Another fully-tinted car, this time a black Toyota Alphard Vellfire, enters the road leading to Najib’s house.

d2dc644d43d6042a96cacf1f70e000f4.jpeg

Police reveal to the media that the person seated inside is “Najib’s son”, but decline to reveal exactly which son.

A check on the vehicle’s registration plate reveals that the owner is Mohamad Nizar Najib, the former premier’s son from his first marriage.

No visitors allowed

12.15pm: Langgak Duta - A silver Mercedes Benz attempts to enter the road leading to Najib’s residence.

When police approach the car, the driver says he is driving a “lawyer” but does not reveal any names. The car windows are fully tinted and the passenger appears to be seated in the backseat.

The car is allowed to enter, however.

11.30am: A man identifying himself as Umno Port Dickson member and Najib’s longtime friend Abdul Rahim Abdul Rahman walks towards Najib’s house but is turned away by police.

“I have come here as a friend of Najib, to come see him and boost his morale. But the police are not allowing him to have any visitors.

“Is he under house arrest or what?” he says to members of the press.

Abdul Rahim says that he, along with four other friends of Najib’s, will attempt to visit the house again at noon.

10am: Several unmarked police vehicles are observed leaving.

While unable to discern their occupants clearly, press members could make out several individuals in hoodies in the cars.

In one car, a person in the passenger seat is seen with his or her face covered.

9.20am: According to the New Straits Times, one of the homes being searched at Pavillion Residence belongs to the son of Najib and his wife, Rosmah Mansor.

It is reported that police are unable to enter another two units as the owner, who is the couple's daughter, are not home.

What happened this morning: At about 10.15pm last night, a police team arrived at the house in more than a dozen cars, followed by the Black Maria, which is often used to transport detainees, at 3.50am this morning.

It was later learned that the truck is being used to transport evidence boxes.

Najib's lawyer Harpal Singh Grewal claimed police seized several boxes of handbags, presents and personal belongings.

Najib is believed to be investigated for money laundering, in relation to the 1MDB scandal.

Bukit Aman commercial crime department director Amar Singh Ishar Singh reportedly confirmed police were searching five locations, including Najib's residence, the upscale Pavilion Residence in Kuala Lumpur and the Prime Minister's Office in Putrajaya.

Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad had on Tuesday said there were no plans to strike a deal with Najib, and that the former would carry on with his pledge to prosecute his predecessor in regards to the scandal-ridden state investment fund.

Anwar says 'shattered' Najib called him twice on election night

Malaysia's ousted former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak was "totally shattered" the night he lost the general election and called his jailed rival Anwar Ibrahim twice for advice on what he should do, Anwar said today.

Najib was handed a shocking election loss last week which ended the dominance of the Barisan Nasional coalition that has ruled Malaysia for more than six decades.

BN's defeat in the country's 14th general election on May 9 was attributed to rising
anger over corruption and an unlikely alliance struck between 92-year-old Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his former rival, Anwar, who got together to oust the scandal-tainted Najib.

Anwar, who was pardoned and released from his five-year jail term for sodomy yesterday, said he had received two calls from Najib.

"When he called on the night of the election, I advised him as a friend to concede and move on," Anwar told Reuters in an interview at his home on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur.

Anwar said he asked Najib to come out with a statement quickly, rather than delay and be perceived as trying to scuttle the process.

cfa79ee6cd13d6020bcee728f6ad7260.jpeg

However, Najib (photo) said nothing despite Mahathir declaring victory a few hours after the counting of the votes began.

At a news conference the next day, Najib said no party had a simple majority and the constitutional monarch would decide who would form the government.

"He was just very evasive... he refused to concede early," Anwar said about his discussion on election night.

He said Najib was thinking of what he could do and who he could consult. But Anwar insisted the former-PM did not approach him for a deal in any "serious manner".

"Even if he had referred to that (a deal) I would have just ignored... I was just listening to him," Anwar said when asked if Najib had offered him a deal to shift allegiance.

"After the second call he was totally shattered," he added.

Najib could not immediately be reached for comment.

"In a close contest between two coalitions, it is not unusual for a leader of the losing team to try to entice members from the other side," said Adib Zalkapli, a Kuala Lumpur-based analyst with risk consultancy Vriens & Partners.

Khairy Jamaluddin, the youth and sports minister in Najib's government, visited Najib at his house on election night and said this week the prime minister had been "calm" and "poised", but that the people around him were "stunned, shocked and sombre".

d1705bbbb63293bbbfb027ce08459735.jpeg

Khairy (photo) was not available for comment today. A spokesman for Khairy declined to comment on Anwar's description of events on election night.

Najib's coalition secured only 79 of Malaysia's 222 parliamentary seats while Anwar's party PKR won 50 seats. An alliance between the two could have secured Najib's return to power.

Last year, Najib visited Anwar at a hospital where he was recovering from a shoulder surgery. The meeting sparked rumours that the two leaders may strike up an agreement to join forces against Mahathir, although this was quickly dismissed by Anwar's team.

'Mahathir the right man'

Mahathir, who was sworn in as prime minister last Thursday, secured a royal pardon for Anwar, and has promised to step aside for his friend-turned-foe-turned-ally to become prime minister.

The relationship between these two giants of Malaysian politics is a saga that has spanned three decades.

Anwar said it had been accepted that he would be the next prime minister after Mahathir steps down, but he wanted to ensure a smooth transition.

"Mahathir has been in power for just a week, so it's not proper to talk about an immediate transition. So let him just continue," Anwar said. He did not give a time frame for this move.

Anwar was Mahathir's deputy in the 1990s, but fell out with his mentor during the 1997-99 Asian financial crisis.

He was eventually sacked from the ruling party and founded the Reformasi movement, challenging Mahathir's government. Within weeks, he was arrested and jailed on disputed charges of sodomy and corruption.

After being freed in 2004, Anwar was jailed a second time for sodomy in 2015, when Najib was in power.

Both times, he and his supporters said the charges were politically motivated.

Mahathir was perfect as prime minister right now as the new government goes about dismantling the obsolete and corrupt system put in place by the long-ruling Umno-led coalition, Anwar said.

Umno's race-based politics and patronage system have been slammed by its critics and blamed for the bulging civil service and weak institutions like the judiciary.

"Probably he seems to be the right man… I am a bit more moderate and have a softer image," Anwar said.

"Because of how I suffered, I always think how any decision would cause sufferings to those affected. So I'm a bit more considerate… and that may not be good in these times when we have to make sure the elements of the old regime do not resurface."

Anwar and his party have faced a protracted struggle to gain power due to electoral systems and government institutions working in favour of the ruling party.

He said the old regime had been dismantled, but the new government could not assume it would retain the level of support and euphoria seen in the last week.

"From my discussion with the PM (Mahathir) this morning, that seems to be the sentiment... we will have to deliver," he said.

"I have given that message. We don't want Umno 2.0."

Police commando Sirul Azhar Umar, who was sentenced to death for the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu, should be given a fresh trial, PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim said.

In an interview with The Australian, Anwar said Sirul's original trial judges were "compromised" as the relevant witnesses were not called, thereby "made a mockery of the law"...

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian police seized 72 bags of jewellery, various currencies and valuables at luxury condominiums in Jalan Raja Chulan on Friday (May 18) morning, believed to be linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) investigations involving former prime minister Najib Razak.

Bernama news agency quoted Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Amar Singh Ishar Singh as saying that another 284 boxes containing various luxury branded bags were also seized.

He said the value of the seized goods could not be ascertained as yet as the seizures were massive, adding that the police would make a detailed inspection later on Friday to determine the value.

“The CCID has inspected six premises related to the 1MDB investigations, namely the Prime Minister's Office, official residence and four other homes,” he told a press conference after checking the condominiums early on Friday.

Amar Singh said among the seized handbags were Hermes and Louis Vuitton brands.

He said the condominiums were among the six locations inspected in connection with the 1MDB case.

“The inspections were conducted simultaneously. As for inspections at the Jalan Raja Chulan luxury condominiums, there was no obstruction or individuals (preventing) the police from carrying out their work at the premises.

“For the raid at the posh residences, the police had obtained the necessary search warrant. The search was completed within two-and-a-half hours,” added Amar Singh.

On the raids at the five other locations, he said among the goods seized were documents which were believed to be linked to the 1MDB and the raids would go on till the completion of the investigations.

On the ownership of the three posh condominium units in Jalan Raja Chulan here, Amar Singh said the owner had a "Tan Sri" honorific title.

On media reports that claimed the seized goods included gold bars, Amar Singh declined comment.

Asked whether the goods were sufficient evidence to prosecute Najib, he said the decision was up to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

“I only received orders to conduct the raids with regard to the 1MDB case,” he added.

Amar Singh also explained that the iron safe found in Najib's residence at Jalan Langgak Duta, Taman Duta, was still in the process of being drilled to be opened.

“We have investigated this case with professionalism ... I have also instructed all my personnel to conduct a detailed and thorough investigation,” he said.

Amar Singh also said some of the seizures were made at Najib's private residence in Taman Duta and gave an assurance to disclose all the seized items at the next press conference.

“In addition, the seizures at the former prime minister's office in Putrajaya, among others, involved 1MDB documents,” he added.

PUTRAJAYA: A police report has been made by members of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia's (PPBM) youth wing, after they claimed to have received information about an alleged attempt to transport and "hide" 50 Birkin bags that possibly belonged to Madam Rosmah Mansor, the wife of former prime minister Najib Razak.

In a statement on Saturday (May 12), the youth members said they received video footage showing the bags being transported to Pavillion Residences condominium in Kuala Lumpur, in a van belonging to the Prime Minister's Department.

The bags were stored in boxes which had tags with the names of the people who gifted the handbags. It is believed that the bags were given to Mdm Rosmah, said the statement, adding that each bag costs at least RM200,000 (US$50,600).

PPBM Youth said it slams the "attempt to transport/hide" the luxury bags.

“The van was seen to have the logo of the Prime Minister’s Department (JPM) and Jata Negara Malaysia. If it is true that the van belongs to JPM, this is an abuse of power,” said PPBM Youth executive committee member Ben Ali.

The youth members urged the authorities to carry out raids on the condominium units involved, considering allegations that Najib and his wife were involved in a massive money laundering scandal.

When contacted by Bernama, Dang Wangi district police chief Shaharudin Abdullah confirmed that a report was made.

Earlier on Saturday, Najib and his wife were barred from leaving the country, shortly after he said in a Facebook post that they were taking a week-long holiday overseas to rest following the Barisan Nasional's defeat in Wednesday's general election.

New prime minister Mahathir Mohamad said he had instructed the Immigration Department to impose the travel ban, as there is sufficient evidence for an investigation to be conducted against Najib.

Authorities in Luxembourg hope Malaysia’s new government may offer new information on some US$100 million from investment fund 1MDB that Luxembourg froze two years ago in a money-laundering probe, judicial sources told Reuters.

Confirming for the first time on Friday that such a sum had been blocked in the Grand Duchy after Swiss private bank Edmond de Rothschild was fined one year ago over money-laundering, the sources said that Luxembourg was keen to pursue inquiries now the new government is looking into troubles at the state fund.

Days after the electoral downfall of the long-time ruling coalition and of premier Najib Abdul Razak, new prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has pushed an investigation into scandal-plagued 1MDB, amid accusations Najib benefited from money from a former entity of the state investment firm.

Najib denies wrongdoing.

In June 2017, Edmond de Rothschild and Luxembourg officials said the bank was fined nearly €9 million (US$10.60 million) for shortcomings in money-laundering controls.

On Friday, the Luxembourg sources said that authorities froze US$100 million in the case a year earlier but had not until now been able to determine what to do with the funds due to a lack of information from Malaysia.
