True. Many oil companies have re-tagged themselves as "energy" companies and fund research for renewable energy. Most are just keeping the development in check so as not to hurt their profiteering business -oil & gas.

Same goes for the food and pharma biz

Just like massage parlor rebrand themselves as Health Centre

Phama do you know that Bayer is making $$$ from Panadol by patenting over and over again. Everytime just add some ingredient to it:mad:

US can't sustain by printing more money to inject into the crumbling market, But again they don't have any other options left. Base on today's scenario, USDX crash is a matter of when.

Everyone is anticipating who is the next world leader. It could be China or India, Brazil or Russia. But history show that world leader emerge unnoticed. Eg Portugual, Dutch, or Japan.

Once the deflationary spiral ran it's course, the inflation cycle will come fast and fury, so enjoy the sub US$50 oil now because the next round, it will hit US$200 at break neck speed.

Same goes for all the commodities.

US consume 30% of world oil produce. If she went down, oil will be down too.

Buay chun lah  Bayer produces aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). Panadol (paracetamol)is by Glaxo Smithkline. But if they do add to aspirin, what do they add? I'm curious, because any addition will be in the ingredients list, which is open for all to see.

Hard to keep a patent on paracetamol nowadays (don't know about asprin).. many generic and other brands available now.

What I believe they are profiteering on is, for one, the HIV anti-retroviral drugs.

With the inevitable crash of the US$ does anyone have ideas as to where to take shelter e.g. gold, Swiss franc?

The OPEC coined the term that oil is a limited resources. (just as white scum coin SG land is limited) This is so that they could jack price to their advantage.

Beside oil and hydrogen, there are "wild" thought to use nuclear or energy from typhoon! A typhoon that stike US can generated enough energy for the whole US per annum!

In fact, I see Thai and Taiwanese are trying to find alternate means for energy better than those scholar or uni guys. And mind you they are common people like you and me. They used coconut oil, reuse cooking oil and one even ignite salt water to flame and generate dynamo!

minigrid and vegetable oil based cogeneration is possible. Anyway, this talk about limited out of proportion. The sun is limited in lifespan with less than 5 billion to go. Human existence is one million at best. We have at least 300 years or coal 50 or more years of nuclear, 150-200 years of shale oil, maybe 100 years of oil, so what the fuck? We only used oil for 100ish at best anyway.

As long as derivatives are around, nothing is safe. You can oversubscribe the demand for oil 100 times but real demand and supply is the same.

There's really no safe place now, gov all over is trying to stop the financial system from bleeding to death.

So unless the current system is overhaul with drastic changes, the same old flawed system is still there.

When the market start to improve, people will conveniently forget about what happen, greed takes over and starts all over again.

When everyone is making money in the stock market, who want to talk about reform?

Fren, all commodities in the world are priced in USD. If commodities price go up, traders have to buy USD to pay the contracts. So USD demand and valuation is in direct relation to commodities prices.

This is only if the world decides to price commodities on a new currency. Remember when Iran tried to open a multi-currency oil trading center? US suddenly come out say they got WMD and want to invade.

In the end, the Iran initiative scrapped.

Yes, The US will always do whatever they can to maintain status quo.

After this round of blood bath, the world now want to look at a departure of over reliance on the US$, if EU /China/ Japan/ Russia all agree to it, then the change will come about and it will not be like Iran's case, where US is still powerful at that time and simply bully them.

Problem is, there is no second currency ready or willing to become the next world currency or alternative currency. Until the day when commodities can be traded outside USD, USA will continue to be world's financial center and print money like nobody business to screw the world over.

Some country, may want to use this opportunity of the century to tilt that scale, Chinese Yuan is one possibility or a basket of currencies, if the world learn the lesson.

But it is difficult because US is too entrenched into the world's economy, having many developed countries buying their gov bonds in the billions just to prop them up or risk a total collapse, but what we see today is near a total collapse, so who knows, this could be the one and only chance the world have to get ride of US, the biggest economic blackmail in the past.

i thought that there will be a total collapse of this current system because we can't always use a new debt to cover an old one. the only prudent way to go: income - savings = expenditure

and looking at the way growth has been plotted over the last few decades, it has been an exponential curve, very much like the growth curve of bacteria in a culture.

looking at the amount of resources we used up everyday, and looking at how nature replenishes its natural supply, there is no doubt we're soon looking at the cliff which is just off the plateau phase we are currently in.:biggrin::biggrin:

Just this morning, Head from BBC, US Congress rejected the 2nd time round, big 3 Detroit auto makers request for money for bailout, they claim that they can't last till Jan.

So they now learn that we can solve problem by throwing money at it. Now the 3 big auto makers in US face a collapse and massive lay offs.

The people in Detroit is angry why gov choose to save some companies but not their auto industry?

They must fist ask, if there are demand for the product they produce rather then to keep the plant open for the sake of employment and churn out products that no one want to buy, wasting earth's resources.

The Chinese Yuan, cannot. China's gahmen has a huge inland poor to feed. If they suddenly up the Yuan value, they will face a peasant revolt. And this time, they have a huge number of educated unemployed students who will join in. So in the next 5-10 years, not possible. Unless China enact protectionist laws like the French CAP.

very true, effort should be channeled into the production of products we need, not want. and one more thing, we shouldn't artificially create that need
