His assets include a 7.3 per cent economic interest in China's largest e-commerce business, which is preparing for what could be the largest initial public offering in US history, and almost half of the parent of Alipay, a separate online-payment service that previously hadn't been included in his net worth ..

It's all about market size. When you create a commercial B2B portal – the concept of portal may not be original but applying it to B2B is – in the world's 2nd largest economy, the billions are there for the taking. If you're the first mover.

Most people copy BUT they copy and innovate so not outright copycat....they developed and improved further....like how they japs did it with their cars and electrical/electronics then.

If you look at where the Japs were at in the '60s & '70s, they were doing wholesale copying from the West – with inferior quality but lower prices – cars, watches, industrial equipment, electronics, etc. 'Made in Japan' was a symbol of mediocrity, to be avoided if you had the money to buy something better. There was a standing joke that if you scratched the paint off a Jap car, you'd see 'Marie Biscuits' inscribed underneath.

It was only from the '80s onwards that Japs gave value add to their copycat products, and created new production processes like zero-defect QC, automation and robotics.

I believe that China is where Japan was in the '60s & 70s, but with a far larger market and financial clout. Give it a couple of decades more and innovation/creativity will follow.

lol there is no way he made $21b before IPO....i knew about this guy from back in 2013,he was only worth 3 bil at that time and alibaba couldnt be worth more than 35 bil......there is no way Jack ma could have earned 21 bil just from running alibaba alone......alibaba's revenue was only 7.5 bil for christ sake,even with a generous profit margin of 20%,thats only 1.5 bil.and unless jack ma owned 100% of alibaba he sure as hell aint getting all the profit from alibaba.....he only owns 7% for fuck sake......the only way he could be worth 21 bil is if he unlocked the full value of alibaba and thats thru a fucking IPO.
