Yes the satellite weather images show a strong storm approaching. It will cause severe weather conditions but good preparation and follow up actions would mitigate against damage and loss of lives.

Just woke up and saw the Yahoo front page with red font words live coverage ! Hope this storm ends soon.

Strong winds and heavy rainfall started in Toronto. The City of Toronto warned residents that we should stock up on necessities for 72 hours, that is enough drinking water and food, fill water for cooking and washing, buy a battery operated radio, etc. and may be a Red Cross disaster kit.

All I have done is cleaned all the washrooms, sinks and bath tubs, filled big pots and buckets of water for cooking and washing. Doing laundry and put it in the dryer tonight, in the event that there may be disruption to electricity which is mostly over head cables instead of being buried underground as in various other countries. Earlier this afternoon, I raked the leaves between the sidewalks and the road outside our house and the neighbours, as well as cleared the leaves near the storm sewers / drainage.

Hopefully, there will be no disruption or no extended dsiruption to the provision of electricity, gas and water.

<<< An important message from The Co-operators

As Central & Eastern Canada prepares for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy and related storm activity such as wind, rainfall and storm surge on coastal areas, we encourage you to take the following precautions to stay safe and protect your property.

In advance of hurricane arrival:

• Listen for evacuation directions and safety advisories from your local authorities and monitor the situation in your area.

• If you do not already have an emergency kit, gather enough necessities for each member of your household for the next 72 hours.

• Unplug small appliances including TVs, computers, microwaves, etc. and do not use a generator inside your house.

• Remove or secure outdoor items such as lawn furniture that could become wind-borne.

• Fill your vehicle's gas tank and park your vehicle in a garage or away from trees.

• Fill your bathtub(s) with water for flushing, washing and cleaning.

• Clear eaves troughs, drains, and sewers of debris and check that backflow and sump pump devices are working properly.

• If you own a watercraft, be sure it is out of water and secured in a building.

• Stay away from shorelines in areas that may be susceptible to storm surge.

• Downed power lines are extremely dangerous and should be avoided. >>>

Hurricane Sandy: Woman killed by flying piece of sign at Keele St. plaza

A flying piece of debris struck and killed a woman in her 50s on Monday evening.

The accident happened outside a Staples store at Keele St. and St. Clair Ave. W. (mid town, but towards the West end)

Toronto EMS says the sign flew off because of strong winds.

The woman was a passerby. She died on scene from trauma to the head. EMS says nobody else was injured.

The sign can still be seen swaying in the wind.
