<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->LETTERS like Tuesday's 'Filial tithes?' by Mr John Tang sadden me.
Singapore is sometimes teased in the international press as a 'nanny' state in which the Government has a finger in almost every social and economic pie. Over the decades, this has led many citizens to rely on the Government to solve every problem, no matter how small.
It has resulted in a ridiculous situation where Singaporeans write to the newspaper to seek government intervention whenever something goes wrong in their lives, for example, when their children do not support them.
There is already legislation in place for parents to take their children to court for maintenance support. Also, the Government has many schemes to help the needy. Finally, it is perhaps the fault of such parents that they did not bring up their children well.
Many of us would like to see Singaporeans become more self-reliant like people in Hong Kong, and less dependent on the Government to solve their problems.

Follow Western values will result in abandoning of parents in old folks home

Confucian values of filial piety are best. Too bad Singaporeans don't know how to learn from China but keep learning all the nonsense from the West

Well, Hong Kong govt provides better welfare to its people than that of PAP govt. S'poreans still have to waste 2 yrs of National Slavery which HK people dont have to.

The PAP govt should not shirk its social responsility to the people by abusing the word 'self-reliant'. If it wants to rule S'pore, then it must take up its fair share of responsilities.
