Its a a full cantonment with temple, kindergarden, shops and community facilities. Its also houses their equipment including armoured vehicles.
1) Though a 2,000 strong Police contingent, they are fully trained soldiers in 6 companies operating along army lines. The number 1 and 2 must have served with British Army Gurkha Rifles and the SAS and fully conversant in their language. They are jungle trained and their training ground is in Brunei and interestingly at Pulada, Johore, reputedly the best jungle warfare school used by most commonwealth forces.
2) The contingent was increased from 400 to 2,000 in late 1990s when the Mahathir began issuing threats over the causeway custom checkpoint incident. Our Gold reserves were rushed to Brunei and not enough Gurkhas were available to guard the usual sensitive locations while escorting the State Treasures. Those who worked along Robinson Road / Shenton way will be aware of the saga that happened over a few days. With the enlarged contingent, they now cover all watch towers in the Prison System and begun roving patrols at Airports and at Main events.
3) They are impartial and a neutral force and is a balance against the SAF. They proved their worth during the Maria Herotogh and 1964 riots. They arrival will lead to immediate dispersal of locals as opposed to people pelting Ang Chia with stones and ball bearings.
4) Contrary to some common perception, the force is a counterbalance if old man has ideas as the primary mover is GKS and he wanted British Officers who are British in Nationality as No. 1 and 2. GKS interviewed and recruited all the COs until his retirement.
5) 2008, for the 1st time in their history there was internal revolt over pay and a number of injured. Couple got sacked.
Ramseth description of the Gurkhas is spot on. Their value is immense. Chia Ti Lik's article is badly written and he is ill formed. Much of Gurkha's role as soldiers are widely covered.
