The Republic's world No. 11 Wang Yuegu was nearly eliminated in the round of 16 yesterday, but showed some real steel to beat Viktoria Pavlovich of Belarus 4-3.
In a match that had the 6,000-capacity crowd at the ExCel arena on tenterhooks, Wang trailed 1-3, before staging a sensational 4-3 comeback win.
"What an absolute quality game," purred the stadium announcer after Wang's win.
The paddler agreed.
"I didn't expect it to be so close because I've never even lost a game to her in our past matches," she said after her 11-8, 7-11, 4-11, 12-14, 11-7, 11-9, 11-8 win over the world No. 23.
"She controlled all my moves, and she was very aggressive with her attacks."
