I am using skype and i am sure many of you should know what skype is.

Are there any better VOIP programs out there?

I have installed a new program called vopium on iphone.

I'm not sure if it's better than skype or the rates are better although u can use 3G to make international calls.

Skype or voip use up a lot of bandwidth, and can give you nasty surprises on ur 3G bills! Has it been ur experience?

I have never used a skypein number meaning others esp overseas can call you on this number and yr cell rings. Because it is routed thru yr data plan,it's not a voice call so you save on International telco rates but yr megabytes on yr internet connection will be rolling like an avalanche!

People seem to struggle to tie VOIP and the mobile phone 3G rates. It can screw you faster than a blink of an eye. In some cases , its a lot cheaper using a phone card where you can prep programme the dialing sequence to a local number.

Skype and the video used in a fixed broadband is truly value for money especially for money. The Skypein is excellent for older folks with overseas phone call phobia and the call forwarding is good.

Using mynetfone here. https://www.mynetfone.com.au/

Using a hardware sip device and currently setting up my netbook with softphone/bluetooth/bluetooth headset/3g wireless to use when I'm overseas on holidays. This way I get to make my $0.15 per call to china/singapore/malaysia 90min phone calls. :D As for bandwidth I think you guys are exaggerating its usage. Voice only needs like 24k at most, plus compression, plus error correcting, it doesn't take as much as video. Put it this way, MP3 at 128kbps sampling takes about 1meg per min. Faq in mynetfone states the following.

How much bandwith does VoIP use?
The amount of bandwidth used depends on how much you use your telephone, as well as what codec you use on your VoIP device.
It also depends whether your Internet plan includes uploaded data (that is, data sent from your computer to the internet) as well as downloaded data (data that is received from the internet by your computer).

The following figures will help you determine how much usage is incurred:

CODEC 1 MINUTE 10 MINUTES 1 HOUR
G.729a 0.23 MB 2.3 MB 13.8 MB
G.711a 0.64 MB 6.4 MB 38.4 MB
G.711u 0.64 MB 6.4 MB 38.4 MB
iLBC 0.20 MB 2.0 MB 12.0 MB

NOTE: The above figures are for one way traffic. If your ISP includes uploads in your total usage, please multiply these figures by two.

Consistence, low ping of your internet connection is more important in my regards and that depends on where you call and how good your ISP in my regards. Luckily in a couple of years time we would be moving to Fttp here so this would be an even lesser issue given the bandwidth and speed.

On 3G mobile phone. On fixed line, cheap as hell.

Does anyone know if there is a Singapore based company like mynetfone? Thinking of setting up a Voip phone for my parents. If not gonna grab a hardware sip device and setup for them when I'm back next. Skype sucks apparently according to most people I talked to.

skype, msn messenger all good lah

why spend unnecessary money to pay singtel, starhub director bonus

do they care for you when they bid world cup?

Nope never. Even though i have just used my new plan for a few months the only time i exceeded the 12GB free bundle was cos i used my 3G to d/l stuff like music, HD movies etc and it was exceeded by just 55mb. Using programs like voip for eg to make phone calls will never ever exceed the 12GB bundle. Trust me. I use my iphone to stream music from my pc and listen to meeradio and other radio stations. There's no way i could even use 6GB out of my 12GB just by streaming alone.

Oh yes nowadays telecos or maybe at least for starhub and m1 they do have a cap for data usage charges. Like m1 will only charge you a max of 30 bucks if u exceed the 12GB or whatever free bundle in the plan so even if u ever exceed it by even as much as 10Gb which is a very very big exaggeration you just pay 30 bucks for eg and starhub and singtel should have something similar.

Lastly skype can only be used on wifi mode on the iphone cos of some laws etc.

The only thing that is worth switching over from one voip to the next is due to the rates. I think skype's rates are not the cheapest among voip brands.

No you wld not, but if you call cellphones or landlines on yr skype, or skype to skype, you'll gobble up yr 12GB pretty quickly. With skype connection, you never know if yours is a super-node, where all other skype users are being channeled thru your connection..Kazaa style..

No it's not likely. 12Gb is really a lot.

The one sure fire way of truly using up the 12gb is by d/ling hd movies or blu ray rips but even then it takes time and if u don't use torrents u'll need to pay some file hosting site.

Firstly voice streaming on voip is not very big probably like 24kb. Radio sites for eg use 128kb which is rather decent and even then it takes some time like hours on the radio with 128kb rate to probably use up 1GB.

The days of being charged exorbitant amounts due to data usage are over if u sign up for a good plan. Singtel is the most stingy out of the 3 telecos but even they won't charge you like thousands of dollars nowadays unlike in the past.

Btw are super node are you talking about? You can choose the ppl to add on skype to chat and then open up a chat room why would it become a super node? You mean to say all of a sudden the millions or thousands of ppl on skype end up using YOUR connection to make phone calls?

What's Skypein? And for those who used skype, what's call forwarding? How and when is... call forwarding used?

thanks

Yes. If there is a congestion somewhere, some of the calls can be routed thru yr port. This is transparent to you and you wld not know it until yr bill comes. Best is not to leave Skype open esp when you are making Skype-Skype calls. If you are already on a chat with say yr fren on Skype to skype, yr port is also open to all other convs that may be routed yr way. So the longer yr chat, the more likely it will be used esp when you have a lot of silent pauses in between yr chats. So better to close and quit when you have ended, or make yr calls short. It doesnt always happen, but I think that Skype is constructed the same way as Kazaa or other P2P networking systems. Readtheir T&C.

So do yahoo messenger. All are free PC to PC.

I hope you know that you still have to pay for yr internet connection charges which go to line their bonuses as well.

Skypein is a local telephone in Singapore that is assigned to you. You pay a small charge to skype for this phone number. You give this number to anyone especially elderly people who find it difficult to use the PC and skype. Wherever you are in this world, it will connect to your skype.

You set in Skype options up to 3 phone numbers that you want your incoming skype calls to go to if your PC is not on or you are not there to answer the PC. You can set the time after which it goes to call forwarding.

Example: Ah Kong calls your skypein fixed phone number 6XXX-XXXX in Singapore, you are playing tennis in Florida and your mobile phone rings at courtside and bingo - you are talking to Ah Kong. Ah Kong pays normal fixed line call charge to Singtel or Starhub, you pay skype charge which is minimal if it call forwarded. If you answer Ah Kong's call at your PC, that is free.

Well in this case that's actually not really a big worry at all. Have you ever tried using skype on a smart phone before. You are not allowed to use skype on a 3G connection only a wifi connection as skype claims due to some laws.

Unless you use a bbom modem with your sim card but even then such connections are not really stable i doubt you could even do torrents or such type of piggy back connections with high speed with a 3G connection.

I actually started this thread with the intention of asking if there were other voip programs other than skype anyone else is using. Well from the replies it seems that using voip even in this day and age is new to some ppl even though voip like skype has been around for like 5 yrs or more.

Looks like i'll ask somewhere else.
