Education, immigration among topics raised at NDR Youth Forum

SINGAPORE : Education, immigration and the economy were among the topics raised at the National Day Rally (NDR) forum for youths on Wednesday.

Many turned up at the NDR Youth Forum held at the Singapore Institute of Management to share their take on the recent rally with cabinet minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.

The forum was attended by some 160 students from secondary schools, polytechnics, the ITE, and universities.

Questions were raised on the newly—introduced through—train option for Normal (Academic) students.

The top 10 per cent of Normal (Academic) students now have the option to skip the ’O’ levels and do a foundation programme in their chosen diploma course.

But some were concerned if students would be forced to make a choice at a premature stage.

"We’re trying to improve the system, to give more options and to make it more flexible for people whom we are confident would have made it anyway," said Dr Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports.

On immigration, a part—time student asked if the influx of immigrants would change Singapore’s identity.

But the minister said Singapore is anchored on meritocracy and equality.

"We say Singapore is multi—racial. We all have the equal right to belong and call ourselves Singaporeans. Yes, there will be competition, but it will be fair competition. There may be inequality of outcomes, but we will still look after each other," said Dr Balakrishnan.

And in light of the recent Youth Olympic Games, one student asked if there will be more funding for non—Olympic sports, such as canoe polo.

The minister said he could not fund all sports equally, but promised to look into the matter.

Other topics raised included Singapore’s society and economy.

The forum aims to engage youths on current issues that concern the well—being of the country.

"We say Singapore is multi—racial. We all have the equal right to belong and call ourselves Singaporeans. Yes, there will be competition, but it will be fair competition. There may be inequality of outcomes, but we will still look after each other," said Dr Balakrishnan.

This is proof that the MIW is living on the different world than the majority Singaporeans.

"We say Singapore is multi—racial. We all have the equal right to belong and call ourselves Singaporeans. Yes, there will be competition, but it will be fair competition. There may be inequality of outcomes, but we will still look after each other," said Dr Balakrishnan.

You judge a man not by his words but by his deeds!

You can however judge a man by the way he puts together his words. Notice the following - There may be inequality of outcomes .... KNNPCB!
Off course there will be unequal outcomes! Stop trying to hoodwink people and being a forked tongue scum! Typical PAPy dog talking to the masses!

"but we will still look after each other," said Dr Balakrishnan."

of course, look after your same kind, making sure money of your same kind
are well look after.:oIo:

If they invite foreign politicians to contest in Singapore election, then I'd say, what the hell, fair competition. But then they'd say, not possible, have to maintain political sovereignty of national Parliament and Government of locals only.

<"We say Singapore is multi—racial. We all have the equal right to belong and call ourselves Singaporeans. Yes, there will be competition, but it will be fair competition.">

Look how he change the level of equal right to: "call ourselves Singaporeans".

What is so bag deal for being able to "call ourselves Singaporeans"? what Singaporeans what is equal rights to question the government how expenses like the YOG fundings, the cost of building HDB flats (it was given out in 1981 by Tey Chong Wye and why not now?) , to be protected like the Hong Kong people from banks which sell funds like the minbonds, have no fear of Lee Kuan Yew etc.

"Fair comeptition"? Then give them 2 yrs of N.S. and a 13 years reservists liability cycle. True-blue Singaporeans got to carry this load so how can it be fair?

How can it be fair when we have to serve National service and the foreigners especially the sons of PRs goes to University and when we are in University after army they are working and they end up as our bosses. We go reservist every year and them??? So as an employer it would make more sense to hire a PR as compared to a sinkie right? Because sinkie goes reservist than his work who do, monetary compensation is useless business needs head count to run...
