Well this thread was also partially started to address the gay issue because I know that there are homophobic people in sammy boy.

Personally I find it easy to accept gay people. While I think that fucking my ass is definitely out of bounds, I'm quite comfortable with the idea that they are fucking each other's asses. Some people get squirmish about using foul language, and other people don't care. It's just like that for gay people also.

I've had a few friends I've known since we were kids and they turned out to be gay. They are ordinary people. Smart people, dumb people, nice people, not so nice people. Feminine people, masculine people. And in many cases, it's impossible to tell by looking.

People sometimes equate gays with ah kuas. Ah kuas are not gays. I'm not free from bias - I feel a little creepy about ah kuas. I don't think that gay people choose to be gay, but being an ah kua is voluntary. Gays are more like left handed people. In a way they are freaks, but the freakishness is so minor it doesn't matter at all. I wouldn't say "those left handed people are so gross" because that's stupid.

Of course I treat them different. I don't anyhow put my arm around a girl and similarly I don't anyhow put my arm around a person I know is gay. I don't care about being in a shower with a gay guy but I'd be extremely concerned if I see his cock standing up. To me they are not female but neither are they entirely male.

It's very amusing when I hear some higher ups in a company I used to work for - they're ex-generals who have a homophobic attitude, but they look up to Apple and want to model the company around Apple. Do they not know the guy who took over from Steve Jobs is gay?

There are people who question whether the gay issue is important. Of course it's important to people who are gay. Chinese people think that Indian or Malay issues are not that important. Announcing to the world that you are gay is a ritual which is increasingly common, and is called "coming out". If you are left handed, it's not a secret. If you are female, it is not a secret. If you are an Indian / Chinese / Ang mor it is not a secret. So why should the fact that a person is gay be a secret? Around 5% of people are gay so whatever it is you are surrounded by gay people like it or not.

As for the question of gay people in national service - the world's most powerful armed forces, the US military has just announced that they accept people who are openly gay. It's not an issue and should never have been one in the first place. The idea that gay people are less effective military leaders was debunked almost 2000 years ago by Alexander the Great who is still regarded as one of the greatest generals of all time.

It was VB who raised this issue during GE11 and after that pretend as if it was a non-issue.

If the poll is anything indicative, 76% don't mind doesn't mean they will vote for VW. But the 24% who minds was almost certain they won't support VW. So all PAP needs to do it to send a subtle reminder to the 24% that there is a gay candidates on the other camp. At the same time they don't overplay this issue just to avoid the JG mistake.

My guess is at the end of the day, it still a net gain for PAP on this.
