Singapore (AFP) - Vietnam's fencers denied Singapore a clean sweep of all seven SEA Games gold medals so far as they toppled local competitors in two finals on Wednesday.

Nguyen Tien Nhat beat Singapore's Lim Wei Wen to win the men's individual epee, before Vu Thanh An took individual sabre gold ahead of local hope Choy Yu Yong.

The two wins took Vietnam to second place in the nascent medals table and slowed the early charge of the hosts, who lead with five titles in the first two days.

Singapore's Wang Wenying won the women's individual foil as the home team added a further three gold medals with the opening ceremony still two days away.

Singapore won the team synchronised swimming, and Yu Mengyu and Yang Zi made it three table tennis golds out of three for the hosts when they beat Thai opposition in the mixed doubles final.

Singapore will be favourites to finish top of the medals table at the biennial, 11-nation Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, which formally opens on Friday.

The unique, two-week event features Olympic sports alongside regional favourites like martial art pencak silat, volleyball-style sepaktakraw and dragon-boating.
