(Vietnam win 3-2 on aggregate)
HANOI: - Tears of joy streamed down the faces of football fans, players and officials as Vietnam became champions of South-east Asia for the first time yesterday in the most dramatic of fashions.
With stoppage time ticking away and the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup final looking destined for extra time, the country's biggest star, Le Cong Vinh, met a disputed free kick with a header that looped over goalkeeper Kosin Hathairattanakool for a 1-1 draw against three-time champions Thailand.
The whistle blew and the capacity crowd at the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi went wild.
For Vietnam had completed a fairy-tale 3-2 aggregate victory, following their stunning 2-1 win in the first leg in Bangkok.
Tens of thousand of people poured onto the gridlocked streets of Hanoi, waving flags, sounding horns and beating together pots and pans after the country's first international title.
'I'm so happy and we have a huge, huge party now,' Vietnam's Portuguese coach Henrique Calisto said while being mobbed by raucous fans.
'The difference with this team is that they believed in themselves and they fought all the way until the end.'
The victory ended the despair Vietnam suffered 10 years ago, when they were beaten by Singapore in the then-Tiger Cup final.
'It was a difficult game all the way until the last minute. It was a cruel blow but, hopefully, we will learn from it,' said Thailand's English coach Peter Reid.
'We were the best team but that's how it goes in football.'
Vietnam appeared happy to sit back and defend their first-leg advantage. But after just 21 minutes, Vu Nhu Thanh failed to track the run of Teerasil Dangda, who charged into the box to head a Sutee Suksomkit free kick into goal.
The home side were stunned.
Defender Suree Sukha had his header well-saved close to half-time and Vietnam goalkeeper Duong Hong Son was again called into action on 59 minutes, when he pushed away Teerathep Winothai's low drive from outside the area.
Thailand paid dearly for their misfiring after conceding a disputed free kick deep into stoppage time, when Vinh collapsed at the feet of Suree despite there being no apparent contact at all.
Vinh buried Thailand's hopes of an unprecedented fourth title when he flicked the ball into the top corner to stun the visitors. REUTERS
