On the eve of Chinese New Year, a West Coast resident noticed a smell, but did not report it initially for fear of bringing bad luck.

It was only when the smell became unbearable three days later that the resident called the police on Jan. 31, according to Shin Min Daily News.

In response to Mothership's queries, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said they were alerted to a case of unnatural death at Block 510 West Coast Drive.

A 53-year-old man was found lying motionless in a flat and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Based on preliminary investigations, SPF do not suspect foul play.

Stayed silent

Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, the neighbour said she noticed a strange scent from her neighbour's unit as early as Jan. 27.

However, as Chinese New Year was approaching, the neighbour said she was worried about attracting bad luck, so she did not report it.

It was only when the smell became overwhelming that she called the police.

The woman told the Chinese media that the man had been living alone since his father died three to four years ago.

"The last time I saw him was last December. I don't know what he does for a living. Sometimes, I don't see him for several months and then he suddenly appears one day," the neighbour said.

Another neighbour told Shin Min that he would occasionally run into the man, and they would exchange greetings.

The man added that he was not home often during the first two days of Chinese New Year, so he did not notice the smell.
