SUISUN, California -- An 18-year-old man is facing several charges after police say he abandoned his 2-week-old son in the parking lot of a strip mall, according to reports.
Daniel Mitchell, 18, was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment, child abandonment, committing a felony while free on bail and misdemeanor possession of suspected cocaine, the Associated Press reports.
Officials tell the Los Angeles Times that security video shows Mitchell pull into the parking lot at about 3:15 p.m. Monday. He can be seen on the video taking the child out of the vehicle in a car seat, setting him on the ground and then driving off.
People in a nearby barbershop noticed the car seat and walked out to investigate, then noticed the baby.
"I noticed he had his binky, he was wrapped up in a blanket," Erick Keeton, who works at the barbershop, tells KCRA Channel 3. "He had a diaper on and he appeared to be fine. His tongue was a little white, maybe like he just had a bottle recently."
The Times reports that after Mitchell drove off, he was involved in a car crash. He tried to run from the scene, but was caught by police.
The baby was taken to a hospital and doctors found the child had a condition that requires special care, the Times reports. The baby is listed in critical condition.
