Things may be a little quieter during the Hungry Ghost Festival this year, as getai organisers are finding it harder to get licences to set up stage, particularly at Geylang Lorong 18, one of the more popular locations.
The Geylang area had previously made the news when getai performances there took on a risque edge with pole-dancers and bikini clad dancers.
Getai organiser Chen Ming Zhi said he has been refused a license to set up a getai there. He was previously fined $1000 after his performers put up raunchy acts.
Other heartland areas have also been protesting against getais, causing worry among performers. One performer pointed out that for each getai that doesn't get a licence, performers and crew all lose their jobs.
