SINGAPORE: The mercury in Singapore hit 37 degrees Celsius on Saturday (May 13), equalling a 40-year record for the highest daily maximum temperature, said the National Environment Agency (NEA).
The 37 degrees Celsius, recorded in Ang Mo Kio, matches the mark set on Apr 17, 1983, recorded in Tengah.
It is also the highest daily temperature for the month of May, breaking the previous May high of 36.7 degrees Celsius at Admiralty last year.
Singapore’s temperature records started in 1929.
In a Facebook post, NEA added that several locations across Singapore recorded temperatures exceeding 36 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
Little respite is expected, at least for the weekend, with warm and dry conditions forecast to continue on Sunday. Short-duration showers, which may help to moderate warm temperatures, are also expected next week, said NEA.
Two weeks ago, the agency said it was "unlikely" for temperatures to reach 40 degrees Celsius. The statement was in response to a text message that purported to warn Singaporeans of a possible incoming heatwave between 40 and 50 degrees Celsius.

To cool down:-

1. Drink lots of plain water to remain hydrated, & whenever mere hint of thirst or headache are evident.

2. Walk, work, stay in the shade where possible as temp are lower than under direct sunlight

3. If working under direct sunlight, wear a cap to shelter the head & face

4. Wear sunglasses to protect eyes from sun glare & reflected light

5. Wear loose fitting clothes for better air circulation. Wear light cotton sweat absorbant colors or heat dissipating clothing. Avoid dark colors as such retains heat

6. Take more cool showers a day when possible to cool down & for hygiene.

Use wet wipes or wet towel to moist head, face & body if shower not possible.

7. Remain calm. The heat will not last forever. We Humankind have no power against Nature but we can ADAPT to it as our ancestors had done & survived.

All the best

"May is normally one of the warmest months of the year," MSS said in an earlier release. The first half of May is forecast to be warm and humid, with daily maximum temperatures reaching 34 deg C on most afternoons.

Let's see what those jiakliaobees say when June, July and August arrives.
