Unfair statement? “Unless we have more babies, Singapore needs to accept immigrants.”

Once again, Mr Lee laid the blame on Singaporeans not having enough births – leaving the government with no choice but to bring in more immigrants to artificially boost up our slowing population.

This is most unfair.

My question to Mr Lee is: ” What has the government does to enhance birth rate here?

Not too much it seems…

Singaporean couples giving birth will receive a monetary gift of $4,000 each for the first and second child. For the third and fourth child, the couple will receive $6,000 each. The money will be given out in four equal installments over 18 months. There are no monetary incentives for the fifth child onwards.
It is obvious that the cash grant is not even enough to cover the hospitalisation cost of the delivery if the couple decides to give birth in a private hospital.

The couple is very much on their own after that and any tax rebate for having children is also only beneficial to those who could earn a solid income.

It seems that the government is not too willing to give out any more money from it’s surplus account to tackle a serious problem when it could dedicate a few days in Parliament to debate the million-dollar paycheck of it’s ministers.

Opening up to immigrants does not solve the aging population problem - it simply enlarges the population. Most of the FTs I know have no more babies than Singaporeans, for the same reasons facing us. Indeed, my impression is that more of them are not having any children than Singaporeans. This observation is shared by an obstetrician friend who says his business among Singaporeans and PRs has been declining.

What does this mean for the age profile of our population? It means we are postponing our aging but that when it does come later, we are dealing with an even large base of aged people.

Even if the birth rate improves this year, it will not solve SG's TFR problem.

As a country, SG must identify and resolve issues that affect Singaporean's desire to procreate. And there are many!!

As long as that man still rule, the problem will remain the same.
Coz no one dare to challenge him. The society today here is not
about making babies; but in feeding n maintaining.
The onus is on the parents n how they want to maintain themselves.
There is fear of losing jobs in today's enviroment.

When PAP says Singapore needs more immigrants, it means need more Chinese, don't you all understand that? The biggest source of Chinese migrants is course the most populous country in the world, China. Now, don't talk about others like Pinoys and Banglas etc. They're mostly on work permits or passes. Very few of them get PR or citizenship. The bulk is from PRC that even many Singapore Chinese complain about out loud.

Personally I feel that even if Singapore can maintain a high birth rate, this country will still import Foreign workers and new immigrants to do the jobs that majority "Shun" away. We should address the huge income gap and status inequality first.

As a country, SG must identify and resolve issues that affect Singaporean's desire to procreate. And there are many!!

All industrialized/post-industrialized countries face this situation - declining birth rates. There is no urgent need to have more since the offsprings are not needed to work the farms, tend the fields. A "minimum" education is getting expensive. People (despite being in matrimonial wedlock) want more individual freedom(s) now that they are affluent, delaying marriage, delaying childbirth. And educated women do not want to be viewed as a brooding sow.

In Sg's case, it is different from other countries as there is no rural population from a hinterland to tap on. Two decades ago, the authorities should've encourage more mechanization and robotics. It is too late now.

we are not facing a population decline for Malays & indians. I think the birth rates for these 2 racial grps are ok (for the moment)

its the Chinese that is worrying - which is why the Old Man said that. But he cannot explicitly go on record to say - malays stop screwing, indians stop screwing.

Or give 10K for example to chinese families and nothing for malays / indians.

So, the next thing he does, he import PRCs to "boost" the Chinese population. Sam said in one of the posts, unless something is done, the racial balance of Singapore will alter in the nxt decade or so. And we don't want it (from government POV).

Declining fertility rates provide a convenient excuse to blame Singaporeans and justify the unpopular decision of importing foreigners to boost the GDP.

I mean, do you honestly believe the PAP government is going to cut back on its insatiable FT addiction if Singaporeans had suddenly experienced a baby boom?

No chance in hell that's going to happen. The urban planning blueprints declare a 6 million population by the end of this decade. The new hospitals, high-rise flats, land sales and developments, additional MRT lines will get their return on investment, by hook or by crook.

LKY is a master of political double-speak, mastering the consummate art of telling half-truths and speaking with a forked tongue.

Though, at his age, he probably should just shut up and live out his remaining days, out of public sight.
