It is apparent that he had not gone down to survey the ground enough (of his target constituency) to understand the demographic and preference of the voters there.

He does not know what proportion are heartlanders. He does not know what proportion are humble heartlanders. He does not know what proportion of humble heartlanders prefer him to be badly dressed. He does not know what proportion of humble heartlanders who prefer him to be badly dressed will vote for him.

His insistence that he could win votes can only be his imagination.
