Cruyff slams Cakir after Nani dismissal

Mar 11, 2013 12:25:00 PM

260976hp2.jpg

The Netherlands legend has had his say on the referee who sent off the Portuguese in last week's Champions League encounter at Old Trafford

Johan Cruyff has hit out at referee Cuneyt Cakir following his decision to dismiss Nani in Manchester United's 2-1 Champions League loss to Real Madrid last week.

The Turkish official's decision has been heavily criticised and Cruyff feels Uefa was wrong to award the second leg of the round of 16 tie to Cakir.

"There's a lot of talk about respect for each other, but that's not really working out, is it? Just look at the decision to appoint this Turkish guy as the referee for the game between Manchester United and Real Madrid. His mother is probably the only one who knows who he is," Cruyff writes in his weekly column for De Telegraaf.

"That immediately makes me wonder who in his right mind made the decision to award such a big game to this guy.

"Especially when you look at the position both clubs find themselves in. You know that Real Madrid will not give anything away and can go pretty far.

"A referee should feel these kinds of things. This was not exactly the case with our Turkish friend."

United were unable to defend their 1-0 lead after Nani's dismissal and eventually lost the game 2-1, having drawn 1-1 in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

UEFA Champions League preview: Schalke v Galatasaray
11 March 2013

307301header.jpg

An in-form Schalke will be confident of progressing to the quarter-finals of the Champions League when they host Galatasaray on Tuesday.

The German side will go into the second-leg match with a slight advantage after managing to score an away goal in their 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Turk Telekom Arena three weeks ago.

And they have won all three games since, including an impressive 2-1 win over local rivals Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

However the win came at a cost with top scorer Klaas-Jan Huntelaar tearing knee ligaments in the second half after earlier scoring what proved to be the winning goal.

Schalke will also be without first-leg goal-scorer Jermaine Jones after he picked up his third yellow card of the campaign in Istanbul, but will still be confident ahead of the game with Jens Keller's side yet to lose in this year's competition.

Galatasaray, meanwhile, have suffered an indifferent run of form recently, culminating in a shock 1-0 loss at home to Genclerbirligi on Friday with their lead on top of the Super Lig table cut to four points as a result.

New signing Didier Drogba missed a penalty in the loss and will be hoping for an improved performance on Tuesday after his largely ineffectual display in the first leg which saw him overshadowed by fellow striker Burak Yilmaz.

Turkish international Yilmaz is in career-best form at the moment, with the 27-year-old managing seven goals in the competition so far including a hat-trick against CFR Cluj in the group stage along with his side's solitary goal against Schalke in the first leg.

Despite Schalke's impressive form of late, Galatasaray will also be confident they can progress to the quarter-finals with the Turkish side winning their last two away games in the competition.

With Fatih Terim's side needing to score at least one goal to stay in the tie, the stage is set for an intriguing European night at the Veltins-Arena.

UEFA Champions League preview: Barcelona v AC Milan

11 March 2013

307300header.jpg

AC Milan will be looking to complete one of the upsets of the Champions League season when they travel to Barcelona on Tuesday.

Massimiliano Allegri's side head into the round-of-16 return leg with a 2-0 aggregate lead after goals from Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari handed Milan victory in last month's first leg at the San Siro.

Despite their aggregate lead, Milan's progression into the quarter-finals is by no means assured against a Barcelona team who have not lost at home in the Champions League in three years and will come out with all guns blazing.

Milan will not be without confidence having gone undefeated in their last 10 matches with their 2-0 win away to Genoa on Friday the perfect preparation for Tuesday's match.

However, they will be without striker Giampaolo Pazzini who suffered a micro-fracture to his right fibula in the Genoa game after opening the scoring for his side.

With Pazzini a constant threat in the first leg and fellow striker Mario Balotelli cup-tied, the absence of key attackers will put greater pressure on the seven-time European champions' defence.

Barcelona have hit a rare spell of bad form recently, not only going down to Milan in the first leg of the tie but also losing twice to bitter rivals Real Madrid in one week.

A comfortable 2-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna in La Liga on Saturday will have calmed the nerves circling the Camp Nou.

Interim coach Jordi Roura, deputising while Tito Vilanova undergoes cancer treatment, warned his men are up for the challenge against Milan.

"We are very clear how we will play against Milan, and how they want to play us. We are psyched," he said after Saturday's win.

Barca will be buoyed by the return to fitness of key midfielder Xavi, who completed a training session on Sunday after being out with a hamstring strain and should have their full array of attacking talent to choose from.

Although Milan are in a strong position thanks to their heroic first-leg performance, they will have to be at their defensive best to hold one of the best club side's the world has seen at bay for another 90 minutes.

Whatever happens, Tuesday's game promises to be an enthralling finale to the tie.

Last week, Ronaldo was at his brilliant best to steer Real through. Tonight, Barcelona need to reverse a 2-0 deficit to AC Milan. Step forward, Lionel Messi... (but will he fail like he did against Chelsea last year?)

Time to deliver: Barcelona are desperate for magician Messi to conjure a great escape as they enter their second leg with Milan two goals down

He scores goals with clockwork regularity and seems to set records more often than some people have hot dinners. In twos, threes, fours - the goals never fail to come, home or away; win, lose or draw. Every week, there is a new landmark, a new benchmark that will never be bettered, another record holder from a bygone era consigned to history's dustbin.

At home, he lines his five La Liga and three European Cup winner's medals in the trophy cabinet next to his four Ballon D'Or globes. There are entire Twitter accounts devoted to his achievements, whole industries feeding off his successes, whole nations of children seeking to emulate him.

But Barcelona have never needed you more than now, Lionel Messi.
Three weeks ago, everything looked so wonderful for the Catalans as a most beautiful Treble of league, cup and Champions League loomed on the horizon. It had been a testing few months, what with coach Tito Vilanova falling ill a few days before Christmas, but a triple haul of silverware was set to be the perfect tonic.

Missed: Messi fluffed his lines by missing a penalty against Chelsea in last season's Nou Camp semi-final

Then, the relentless march - of Messi and of the team - came grinding to a halt.He had scored 14 goals in the seven matches leading up to it, but he failed to score in the Copa del Rey semi-final, first leg against eternal rivals Real Madrid.Just a blip, we thought, as he hit back with four in three in league games, taking his season's tally to an astonishing 44.

But then - shock horror - another misfire at the most important time - in the San Siro against Milan in the first leg of this attractive Champions League round of 16 tie. Messi's threat was snuffed out by the Rossoneri, his chances were few and far between, and strikes from Kevin-Price Boateng and Sulley Muntari gave the favourites a mountain to climb. Then, six days later, when they needed him again, to kill off Real in the Cup second leg, he was well and truly overshadowed by two-goal Cristiano Ronaldo. Ah yes, Ronaldo. The other 'best player in the world', Messi's adversary and nemesis. The other half of the latest of the great sporting rivalries in the tradition of Coe vs Ovett, Senna vs Prost, Ali vs Fraizer.

Beaten: Messi (background) was helpless as Kevin Prince Boateng inspired Milan to a 2-0 first leg win

He stepped up against Manchester United - he put all the emotions associated with facing his former club aside, and he delivered the winning goal. That was the self-styled 'match the whole world wanted to see' and Ronaldo bore the weight of the world's expectation as though it were a feather with goals in both legs. Does this mean Ronaldo is the best footballer in the world? He's not far off, many would say he's there already.

Time to prove yourself again on the biggest of stages, in the tightest of spots, and lead one of the most sensational comebacks in Champions League history. Messi is a magician, but is he an escape artist?

'Only masochists enjoy playing against Barcelona' - Muller

By Stefan Coerts

262034hp2.jpg

The versatile attacker believes that any ambitious team would welcome an early Champions League exit for the Catalan giants

Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller hopes that Barcelona fail to overcome their 2-0 first-leg defeat in the return of their Champions League round-of-16 tie against AC Milan on Tuesday.

The Germany international feels the Primera Division leaders are one of his side's main rivals for European glory, and would not mind seeing them eliminated from the competition before the quarter-final stage.

"There is not a single team in the world who enjoy playing against Barcelona, except perhaps a few masochists," he was quoted as saying by TZ.

"Any team who have the ambition to win the Champions League would not mind if one of the top favourites crashes out at this stage of the competition."

Barca have reached the semi-final stage every year since 2006-07.

Schalke 2 Galatasaray 3 (agg 3-4): Drogba's Champions League adventure goes on

By ANDY JAMES PUBLISHED: 21:42 GMT, 12 March 2013 | UPDATED: 22:47 GMT, 12 March 2013

Champions League quarter-finalists

Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Galatasaray, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Arsenal, Malaga or Porto

Galatasaray reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League after edging out valiant Schalke at the Veltins-Arena. Despite taking an early lead through Roman Neustadter, the German side were ultimately undone by strikes from Hamit Altintop and Burak Yilmaz just before the break. Although Michel Bastos levelled just after the hour, Schalke still needed another as Gala had scored more away goals and their all-out attack left them vulnerable at the back, with the Turkish outfit making sure of their progress thanks to Umut Bulut's injury-time effort.

Goals: Neustadter 17, Michel Bastos 63.

Galatasaray: Muslera, Eboue, Kaya (Zan 78), Nounkeu, Riera, Felipe Melo, Altintop, Sneijder(Amrabat 70), Inan, Drogba, Burak Yilmaz (Bulut 86).Subs not used: Iscan, Balta, Kurtulus, Sarioglu.
Booked: Drogba.
Goals: Altintop 37, Yilmaz 42, Bulut 90+4.

Referee: Jonas Eriksson (Sweden).
Attendance: 52,000.

The Super Lig leaders were looking to bounce back from an embarrassing home defeat to Genclerbirligi in their last domestic outing and they started in confident fashion. Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba looked imperious early on and Schalke goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand had to be at his best to tip the striker's fierce effort round the post. The Ivorian then played in Selcuk Inan, who ran through on goal but lost his balance and his shot did not unduly trouble Hildebrand.

It seemed only a matter of time until the Schalke goal was breached but it was the hosts who took a 17-minute lead very much against the run of play. The visitors failed to clear their lines from a corner and Joel Matip played the ball back to Neustadter, who slotted home with his outstretched left foot. The strike seemed to settle Schalke, who had won all three league games since the draw in the first leg.

Wesley Sneijder served notice to the Gelsenkirchen side, however, when he fired narrowly wide from just inside the area before Altintop brought the tie back to life in the 37th minute. Drogba squared a free-kick to the Turkey international 25 yards from goal and his fierce blast went in off the post.

And five minutes later, Gala had taken the lead when Burak shrugged off the challenge of Benedikt Howedes and lifted over Hildebrand for his eighth Champions League goal in as many games. Jens Keller's men started the second half in positive fashion and Teemu Pukki - starting in place of injured star striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar - turned on the edge of the box before his rattling low effort was pushed away by Fernando Muslera at his near post.

The Gala goalkeeper was at fault, however, when Michel Bastos levelled in the 63rd minute. Marco Hoger fired against the crossbar and although it looked like there would be no follow-up, Muslera fumbled and left Atsuto Uchida to square for the Brazilian to fire into an empty net. Sneijder went close to immediately regaining the lead for Gala but he hammered wide but it was Schalke who gained the upper hand thereafter, with Muslera slightly redeeming himself by smartly parrying away Julian Draxler's effort.

Gala then had to make a change as defender Semih Kaya was carried off the pitch having been knocked out although that did not seem to affect the Istanbul side, who held firm in spite of some probing pressure from Schalke. However, the hosts left themselves wide open to the counter in search of a winner and it was Gala who stole up the other end to make sure of their progress to the quarter-final.
