UEFA Champions League preview: Galatasaray v Schalke
18 February 2013
Galatasaray striker Didier Drogba should renew his love affair with the Champions League when his new club take on Schalke on Wednesday.
Drogba's team will host Schalke in a round-of-16 first leg and if Galatasaray head coach Fatih Terim is at all attracted to the idea of starting the Ivory Coast striker against the Germans, he should act on that temptation.
Having scored on his Galatasaray debut on Friday, Drogba should be able to get through at least an hour against Schalke and with his record of 39 goals in 75 Champions League matches, Terim should be able to rely on the 34-year-old striker to perform at Turk Telekom Arena.
Drogba, who joined Galatasaray from Shanghai Shenhua in January, sits ninth on the all-time goal-scorers charts in the Champions League era, just three behind former Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero.
Plus, the last time Drogba played against Schalke, in a Champions League group stage match in the 2007/08 season, he scored as Chelsea won 2-0.
Galatasaray head into Wednesday's game top of the Turkish Super Lig having won three of their past four games, while they are also on a three-match winning streak in the Champions League.
Drogba came off the bench in the 63rd minute of Galatasaray's 2-1 win away to Akhisar Belediyespor on Friday and scored the opening goal, a typically powerful header after he out-jumped two opponents.
Terim should have plenty of confidence that his team can grab a first-leg lead against Schalke as the German club are in the middle of a terrible slump in the Bundesliga.
Schalke have won just one of their past 12 matches and sit ninth in the Bundesliga having failed to triumph in their past four fixtures.
Jens Keller, Schalke's head coach since replacing Huub Stevens in December, will make his Champions League debut in Istanbul.
Schalke came from behind twice on Saturday to earn a 2-2 draw away to Mainz with Brazilian winger Michel Bastos scoring both goals.
Bastos has provided much much-needed spark to Schalke's play since he arrived from Lyon in January, scoring three goals in as many games for the Gelsenkirchen-based club.
UEFA Champions League preview: AC Milan v Barcelona
18 February 2013
AC Milan will need to continue this year's good form if they are to have any chance of defeating their UEFA Champions League nemesis, Barcelona.
Milan are on a six-game unbeaten run, including four wins but head coach Massimiliano Allegri will have to rejig his forward set-up against Barcelona with Giampaolo Pazzini set to play in the middle of a front three for the Italian club.
New recruit Mario Balotelli, who is on fire since moving from Manchester City with four goals in three matches, is cup tied having played for his former club in the Champions League, while Stephan El Shaaraway is struggling with a knee problem.
Allegri is expected to stick with the wide forwards from Milan's 2-1 win over Parma on Friday, Kevin-Prince Boateng and M'Baye Niang, while Pazzini will replace Balotelli in the central position.
Pazzini has not played a minute in Milan's past three games in Serie A but remains the club's second most-prolific goal-scorer in the league with 10 (El Shaaraway leads with 15), although the 28-year-old striker will need to be on top of his game to help his side against their European nemesis.
Milan have failed to defeat Barcelona in the past seven meetings between the two sides, with the Catalans having claimed four victories in that time and twice knocking Milan out of the Champions League.
Last season, Barcelona and Milan drew twice in the group stage before the Catalans claimed a 3-1 aggregate victory in the quarter-finals.
Barcelona head into Wednesday's game following a 2-1 victory away to Granada in La Liga on Saturday.
Lionel Messi scored both goals for Barcelona over the weekend taking his season tally to 46 and 12 in his past nine games for his club.
Despite Messi's regular brilliance in front of goal, Milan should retain some hope against Barcelona' as the Catalans have been in poor defensive form over the past month.
Barcelona have failed to keep a clean sheet in nine matches and if Allegri goes with a front three at the San Siro on Wednesday, Milan should have enough options up front to breach the visitors' defence at least once.

Mijatovic & Suker talk up Real Madrid chances against Manchester United
By Livio Caferoglu
Feb 16, 2013 3:57:00 PM
The Blancos could only draw the first leg of their last-16 showdown with the Red Devils, but the duo have confidence in the side's ability to turn the tie around
Former Real Madrid stars Predrag Mijatovic and Davor Suker remain hopeful that their former side can see off Manchester United in the Champions League.
The Blancos failed to make home advantage count in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie against the Premier League leaders, with a 1-1 draw being played out in the Spanish capital, and they now face the tricky prospect of going to Old Trafford without a lead.
But Mijatovic, who scored the winning goal in Madrid's 1998 Champions League final triumph over Juventus, told Marca: "Real should have won. They played well in the first half. United were lucky at the start.
"If the [Fabio] Coentrao ball had gone in... Real had more possession in the second half, but without much intent or ideas.
"Sometimes it's better to have the ball less and create more danger. It could still be anybody's. We shouldn't write Real off. They can win, of course they can win in Manchester."
Meanwhile, Mijatovic's ex-Madrid strike-partner Suker, believes there is still much to play for when the Liga holders travel to the Theatre of Dreams.
"I don't have any doubts [that Madrid will progress]. There is another game to be played. Real were strong in the first leg and got away without being beaten," the ex-Croatia forward added.
"But Real are capable of winning at Old Trafford. It is a good stadium to play and win at."

UEFA Champions League preview: Borussia Dortmund v Shakhtar Donetsk
4 March 2013
Borussia Dortmund enter the second leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday as favourites.
The reigning Bundesliga champions claimed a 2-2 draw in Ukraine in the first leg thanks to a late Mats Hummels equaliser and the away goals could be crucial in determining who goes through to the quarter-finals of Europe's premier club competition.
Also in Dortmund's favour is their sensational home form in the Champions League.
Juergen Klopp's side were one of only four sides to notch a perfect home record in the group stage, with the statistic even more impressive when you consider the wins came against Real Madrid, Manchester City and Ajax.
Dortmund have not reached the last eight of the competition since the 1997-98 season and Klopp knows his team still have plenty of work to do.
"We were the best team in Donetsk, but despite that it finished 2-2, to be the better team again is a real challenge for us," Klopp said.
"We still have too much to do. We are a bit too far away to be wishing for a particular opponent in the next round."
Polish forward Robert Lewandowski has been in excellent form for Dortmund in the Champions League, scoring four goals, and he has also been firing domestically, netting 16 times in 21 appearances.
Dortmund sit second in the Bundesliga, 17 points behind runaway leaders Bayern Munich.
Shakhtar are enjoying plenty of success in their league, with 18 wins from 19 matches seeing them 13 points clear on top of the table.
Armenian attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan has 18 goals in as many appearances in Ukraine's top-flight while Brazilian Alex Teixeira has also been a threat going forward.
Shakhtar impressed in the group stages of the Champions League, edging reigning champions Chelsea out for second spot in Group E behind Juventus.
With an array of Brazilians - Luiz Adriano, Ilsinho and Douglas Costa just to name a few - and experienced defenders Darijo Srna of Croatia and Romanian Razvan Rat, Shakhtar have the manpower to pull off an upset.
Rat knows it will be tough, however, particularly with the onus on his team to be the aggressors.
"It will be very difficult for us in Dortmund, because we will be under a lot of pressure," said Shakhtar Romania defender.
"They have got great fans and they will also be confident after getting a good result in the first leg. A 0-0 draw would suit them, so we need to attack and take risks, but, at the same time, we must make sure that we do not concede."
UEFA Champions League preview: Manchester United v Real Madrid
4 March 2013
Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson says his side will not be intimidated by Real Madrid heading into Tuesday's Champions League tie.
Real Madrid travel to Old Trafford for the second leg of the round-of-16 clash in form, having beaten Barcelona in consecutive Clasicos over the last week.
Jose Mourinho's side were in rare form as they defeated Barca 3-1 in last Tuesday's Copa del Rey encounter, while Madrid repeated the dose in a 2-1 victory over their bitter rival in La Liga action last Saturday.
The two results came despite a disappointing La Liga campaign for Madrid and Ferguson believes Mourinho's team may have peaked just a fraction too early heading into the second leg of a tie that is evenly poised after a 1-1 first-up result at the Bernabeau.
"I don't think they'll reach that height this Tuesday," Ferguson said.
"I think it was a one-off performance. They were brilliant."
He added: "On Tuesday their counter-attacking was terrific.
"We're aware of that and our preparation has to include that, but I think we'll score, I really do.
"They'll still play well and we'll have to make sure we play well, but the other night they really hit the heights."
Despite having a laser pointed at his face during the match at the Nou Camp, Cristiano Ronaldo still dominated the encounter to score two goals.
Tuesday's clash represents the first time Ronaldo has returned to Manchester since leaving the club in 2009.
And Ferguson is well aware his former midfielder can turn a match in seconds after seeing him score in the first leg despite being well held by Phil Jones for the majority of the game.
When asked how he intends to stop Ronaldo this time around, Ferguson joked: ''I've got a plan, it's called a machete. Plan B is the machine gun!"
Ferguson sprang several selection surprises ahead of last weekend's clash with Norwich, using key striker Robin van Persie despite the Dutchman hurting his hip a week earlier when he fell into a photographer's dug-out.
But van Persie successfully played out his time during the 4-1 win over Norwich and appears a certain starter on Tuesday evening as veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs also returns to Ferguson's team for his 1000th appearance for the Red Devils.
United striker Shinji Kagawa will also take some confidence into the encounter after scoring his first hat-trick in United colours against Norwich, while Wayne Rooney also stepped up to score a blinder from 25 yards, lending credence to Ferguson's belief that his side can score against Real Madrid.
Along with Ronaldo, Real Madrid have several other attacking weapons as Karim Benzema found the back of the net against Barcelona early in last Saturday's win over Barcelona and the team also includes Mesut Oezil, Luka Modric, Kaka and Michael Essien.
And Ronaldo should also be well rested for Tuesday's game, having played for just over 40 minutes on the weekend as he entered the fray as a second-half substitute.
Van Persie, Alonso, Vidal & the Champions League stars one yellow card away from suspension

A fair few of Europe's finest will be treading lightly in the last 16 as they look to avoid picking up a booking that would keep them out of a quarter-final clash
Shakhtar Donetsk travel to Germany on Tuesday with both Luiz Adriano and Tomas Hubschman just one yellow away from sitting out of a possible quarter-final first leg. There will be no such concerns for Jurgen Klopp, however, with his Borussia Dortmund side having picked up just six bookings in total so far - the best disciplinary record of any team to have made it the last 16.
Manchester United host Real Madrid in a mouth-watering tie at Old Trafford that same evening, and the Red Devils would have to do without Robin van Persie and Rafael in their next game should the duo pick up cautions. Likewise, both Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos run the risk of a suspension having both picked up two bookings during the group stage.
Juventus could be missing some key players of their own following their game against Celtic, with Arturo Vidal, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Claudio Marchisio having left themselves no margin of error. James Forrest and Scott Brown will have to tread lightly should the Hoops pull off a miracle in Turin, though the latter is expected to miss the match through injury.
Paris Saint-Germain's Thiago Silva and Blaise Matuidi can’t afford to go into the referee’s notebook this week, and neither can Valencia's Antonio Barragan, Tino Costa or goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.
AC Milan will have to be up for the fight when they take a two-goal lead to Barcelona, though Mathieu Flamini, Philippe Mexes, Daniele Bonera and Riccardo Montolivo will have to curb their enthusiasm if they hope to feature in a possible last eight tie. Alex Song, Pedro, Javier Mascherano and Adriano will have to watch their step for the hosts.
Joel Matip and Marco Hoger both sit on two bookings and will have to be careful to avoid another for Schalke, while visitors Galatasaray could be without as many as five should they lose their discipline in Gelsenkirchen, with Albert Riera, Burak Yilmaz, Dany Nounkeu, Selcuk Inan and Nordin Amrabat all walking a tightrope.
Bayern need only worry about Javi Martinez and Dante as they look to finish off Arsenal. Arsene Wenger, however, has no less than six players who stand just one mistimed tackle away from missing their next game should they pull off an unlikely victory in Munich, with Thomas Vermaelen, Aaron Ramsey, Lukas Podolski, Laurent Koscielny, Mikel Arteta and Santi Cazorla all facing potential suspensions.
Porto have no concerns, with only fringe player Abdoulaye Ba facing a possible ban. Weligton, Manuel Iturra and Sergio Sanchez will have to show extra care for Malaga.
Stop the world! European showdown will thrill the planet, says Jose as he prepares to do battle with Man United (... but Real boss insists he will not cry if Spanish giants lose)

Jose Mourinho says the world will stop to watch Tuesday night's Champions League clash between Real Madrid and Manchester United. The Real Madrid coach believes the second leg at Old Trafford between two of the best teams in Europe should be the final at Wembley in May. Real, who drew 1-1 in the first leg at the Bernabeu two weeks ago, must score to stand any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals.

Mourinho on Man Utd v Real: The world will stop to watch
Mourinho, who appeared relaxed and confident, said: 'The world will stop to watch this tie. It looks like the final, but let's see which teams arrive at Wembley. I doubt the expectation can be bigger.' His counterpart Sir Alex Ferguson agreed, saying: 'As a European night I don't think you get any bigger than this one. Great clubs with great histories. It is set up to be a marvellous game and I don't think it will be a disappointment.' Real are in confident mood after reaching the Copa del Rey final last week after beating Barcelona, and they also won last Saturday's El Clasico 2-1 at the Bernabeu.
Not a one-man team: Former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso is another familiar face United will have to keep quiet
Mourinho said: 'Who knows what will make the difference in the game - it's the million-dollar question. I will not cry if we lose and I will not run 100 metres if we win. 'Manchester United are better than ever. They have won the Premier League already and it's only March, they haven't lost a match for months and they are in the FA Cup quarter-final. We are also in good form in 2013.' With the exception of Iker Casillas, who has travelled with the squad but is injured, Mourinho has a full-strength team.Mourinho added: 'The players are happy. We cannot win the championship (La Liga), but the Champions League is different.
Final countdown: Sir Alex and Sir Bobby Charlton watch the players train at Carrington
'It is better to play a game like this when the players are happy and they are fine because they beat Barcelona twice.'We travelled on Sunday because we didn't want to wait for the game. It is a pity because we have to wait. We want to play now.' United have the advantage of an away goal following the first leg, but Sir Alex Ferguson fears Real's attacking instincts. The United manager, who confirmed that Ryan Giggs will make his 1,000th appearance at some stage of the tie, will need to contain his former star Cristiano Ronaldo.
All seeing eye: Jose Mourinho kept tabs on his squad as they went through their paces
Ferguson said: 'If you are preparing for a game you have to pay respect to the strength of the other team, which we do on every occasion. 'We work on them in terms of the shape of the team, their tactics, who their best players are, and that applies with Real.'We know the strength of our team. We know our strength, we know how we will play. If we win 5-4 we are through. I think there will be goals and I think both teams will score. We have to think we will score more.'

Sir Alex Ferguson has a poor record when facing Jose Mourinho’s sides. The United manager has won just twice in 15 matches against Mourinho, who has had success with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid. He has been defeated six times, and there have been seven draws. Here are some of the rivals’ most memorable encounters...

Mourinho: I won't be running 100m down the touchline this time if I beat Manchester United!

The Real Madrid boss has had some infamous celebrations in his past, including a 100-metre dash down the Old Trafford pitch when coach of Porto but says it will not happen again
Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has pledged he will keep his emotions muted if his side progress past Manchester United in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
The Portuguese has had some infamously extroverted celebrations in the past, including a touchline-spanning run at Old Trafford when with Porto, dashing across the pitch at Camp Nou after defeating Barcelona with Inter and sliding on his knees following Cristiano Ronaldo's last-minute winner against Manchester City this season.
However, the 50-year-old says that, while the game is no less important to him than when he first got the better of Sir Alex Ferguson, he will be keeping himself under control whatever the result.
"It [the fixture] means the same," Mourinho told reporters, "but I approach the situation differently with different emotions.
"To win a big match is the same as it was nine years ago. If I lose tomorrow, I won't cry and, if I win, I will not be running 100 metres down the touchline."
The Portuguese's side are level 1-1 on aggregate heading into the away leg of their tie against Manchester United but will again face the Premier League leaders without captain Iker Casillas, who remains sidelined with a hand injury.
The English side, meanwhile, will be without utility player Phil Jones, who limped out of their FA Cup clash against Reading with an ankle injury, but can call on Rio Ferdinand in defence after recovering from the flu.

Ferguson: Ronaldo can hurt us, but we can damage Real Madrid too
Mar 4, 2013 2:09:00 PM
The 71-year-old believes that while his former charge will inevitably pose problems, he wants his current players to focus on the damage they can do to the Liga champions
Sir Alex Ferguson has urged Manchester United not to focus all their energy on Cristiano Ronaldo, and instead focus on posing Real Madrid problems in the Champions League last 16 clash.
Ronaldo scored the equalising goal in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, and while much has been made of the Portuguese's return to Old Trafford, Ferguson has called on his current players to play their own games.
"What do you expect when you play against a team with Ronaldo in it? You expect problems during the night, and we'll have to try to curtail that as best we can," he told reporters.
MAN UNITED LOOK TO CHARM RONALDO
Sir Alex Ferguson wants to put United in pole position to sign the Real Madrid attacker "It's not going to be easy because he does it every week. The experience young Rafael had in the first half in Madrid will hopefully help him, because he will be given the same task again. I don't think it's one we should fear. If we go and worry about the damage that Cristiano can do to us then we forget some of the things we can do ourselves.
"As we know, I believe they are one of the best counterattacking teams in Europe. That showed itself last Tuesday at Camp Nou [when Madrid beat Barcelona 3-1], they were absolutely stunning. We've got to find a way of coping with that but posing an attacking threat also.
"If you're preparing for a game at any level you have to pay respect to the strength of the other team, which we do. We look at their dangerous players and tactics. That applies itself tomorrow, we also know about the strength of our own team and where we are. We know our strengths and our pattern of play and hopefully it helps us tomorrow."
Ferguson also confirmed that Phil Jones will miss the game with an ankle injury.
The 21-year-old, who played a key role in the first leg, limped out of the FA Cup game against Reading in February and has lost his race to be ready for the return.
"He's not fit. He won't be fit for [Tuesday]," the manager continued.
"His performance over there was absolutely excellent. It's a miss but it's not something we can't manage, we've got options."
Ferguson believes Madrid will score at least once on Tuesday, and told fans to expect a great spectacle.
"It's a massive build-up, you can see the amount of cameras at the training ground, that gives you some indication," he said.
"I think that both teams are in form. Real have had two fantastic performances against Barcelona, I saw the first one and they played very well. They've found form at the right time, whereas our form as been consistent for quite a while. As a European occasion I don't think you get bigger than this. It's set up to be a marvellous game and I don't think it will be a disappointment.
"I think there'll be goals, I think both teams will score. We have to think that we can score more than one."
When asked about the possibility of Jose Mourinho succeeding him at Old Trafford, Ferguson was in no mood to discuss his future.
"It's impossible to discuss who is going to replace me because there is no time-frame on it."
The BVB boss is determined to make the most of their two away goals from the first leg, while revealing Mats Hummels could still feature
Jurgen Klopp says Borussia Dortmund have a "slight advantage" ahead of the second leg of their last 16 Champions League tie with Shakhtar Donetsk.
BVB came away from the Donbass Arena with two away goals after drawing 2-2 with the Ukrainian champions in the first game and the 45-year-old is anticipating another tight affair.
"It will be a difficult game for both teams. We both showed why we have reached this stage during the first leg. I feel we hold a slight advantage going into tomorrow's game.
"Maybe we can surprise Shakhtar by showing more than we did against Bayern. We must do if we harbour any ambition of progressing to the next round."
Mario Gotze echoed his trainer's sentiments, and said BVB were focused on ensuring they make the most of their first-leg efforts.
He added: "They showed their quality in attacking in Donetsk, scoring twice. We want to make the most of the slight advantage we have.
"As a kid I dreamed of playing in the Champions League and going this far. It's a fantastic competition."
Klopp also issued a statement regarding the fitness of defender Mats Hummels, whose participation in the match is still in the balance.
"He was able to run today and he will rest at home this evening and train tomorrow. There remains a little bit of hope [that he will be fit to play on Tuesday]."
Pirlo: I'm using Liverpool defeat to prepare for Celtic
By John Christodoulou
Mar 4, 2013 10:45:00 PM
The Italian refuses to believe the Champions League tie against the Scots is over, and insists the Old Lady must put in a good performance to avoid a shock defeat like in Istanbul
Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo says he is using the defeat to Liverpool in the 2005 Champions League final to prepare himself with the Serie A leaders set to host Celtic.
The 33-year-old was part of the AC Milan team that threw away a 3-0 lead in the second half to the Merseyside club in Istanbul in 2005, and eventually lost the match in a penalty shootout.
The experienced midfielder insists that the bad memory will spur him on in the second-leg encounter, as his current club hold the same advantage against Neil Lennon's side, and he will ensure that his team-mates do not underestimate their opponents.
"I will never forget the game against Liverpool in Istanbul - for all the wrong reasons," Pirlo told the Scottish Sun. "And it is a game I will be reminding myself of before Celtic.
"We are in a very strong position and expect to progress after the result in Glasgow - but we can't think all we need to do is turn up.
"Celtic for a start will be wounded.
"They are a very proud football club and have a very proud set of fans. It will have hurt them to see the way they were beaten at their home - and if we are complacent, then that is when they could have their revenge.
"If we stay professional and concentrate then I am confident we can progress.
"We respect our rivals but to fail against the Scots in Turin would be one of the biggest disasters in the history of this club."
Despite their spot in the quarter-finals being all but secure, the former AC Milan maestro concedes that the Serie A club are not favourites to win the competition.
"We have to be realistic, we know we are not favourites for the Champions League. People will look at Bayern, Real Madrid, Manchester United and even after their defeat, Barcelona," Pirlo added.
"The most important thing we can do is stay focused against Celtic in Turin — and then we can see what the draw brings after that."
However, his Chilean team-mate midfielder Arturo Vidal insists the tie is over, and other clubs will be fearful of drawing Juventus in the next stage of the competition.
He said: "It is impossible for Celtic to beat our score from the first leg. It would take a miracle for them to go through.
"The difference between the two clubs is huge and it is up to us to show in this game we are in contention to win the Champions League.
"I think this team can go far in the competition."
Mourinho is still the pupil to master Ferguson - McQueen
Mar 5, 2013 8:45:00 AM
The former Manchester United defender says that the Scottish manager is often underestimated when it comes to his tactics and the Portuguese boss respects him more than most
EXCLUSIVE
By Russell Stoddart
Former Manchester United great Gordon McQueen says that Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho is still a pupil when compared to the master, Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Premier League leaders go into the return leg at Old Trafford on Tuesday night as slight favourites after an impressive 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu, thanks to what McQueen says were some inspired tactical choices from a manager whom the Portuguese respects more than all others.
"There is not just a friendship between the two of them, there is a sort of master and pupil relationship," the ex-United star told Goal.com. "Mourinho is more gracious towards him than any other manager he's come up against - even Pep Guardiola at Barcelona.
"Fergie has managed twice as many Champions League games as Mourinho and I think he used that experience to good use in the first leg.
"It is no accident that United have been such a success story over the past couple of decades. He is solely responsible for the way the club is set up. He appointed the scouts that went out and found promising talent and then chose the coaches that made them better players.
"People talk about Fergie's man-management skills but they underestimate his tactical acumen. You don't win what he's won in his managerial career with just the 'hairdryer' treatment and a few well-chosen words.
"Although Cristiano Ronaldo scored in Madrid, I thought United kept him quiet and that was down to getting the tactics spot on.
"Fergie kept us guessing what he had planned for Ronaldo and I don't think anyone thought he'd use Phil Jones in front of Rafael to act as a buffer but it worked a treat.
"Rafael might have fancied his chances of stopping Ronaldo with one-on-ones but Jones did a great job denying Ronaldo the space to run at the young Brazilian.
"The one blot was Ronaldo's goal, but no amount of tactics would have stopped his headed equaliser, he's just so good in the air."
McQueen believes that United will be favourites to win the Champions League if they can see off Real Madrid but it will mean players such as Robin van Persie playing for the jersey and not just the glory.
He continued: "I think it's crucial that United are not chasing the game. It would have played into Madrid's hands.
"United will be happy with a goalless draw, and while Fergie says he doesn't believe it will end that way, it means they can be more cautious.
"This is the sort of stage that Van Persie craved when he joined United from Arsenal last summer, but he cannot afford to let his own personal ambitions be put in front of the team.
"He will be frustrated that he didn't give United a first-leg win, but being a world class player is about your value to the team and he has to be a team player tonight and not be greedy. In that respect he can take a leaf out of Wayne Rooney's book."
The man who could have stopped Ronaldo - how Manchester United will regret losing out on Raphael Varane
Mar 5, 2013 8:30:00 AM
The French centre-back came close to moving to Old Trafford in 2011, before Real Madrid sent Zinedine Zidane to Lens to tie up a deal. Two years on, he looks the complete defender
PROFILE
By Ben Hayward | Spanish Football Writer
Raphael Varane is ready. The 19-year-old defender was handed a surprise start in the first leg of Real Madrid's Copa del Rey semi-final against Barcelona at the end of January, and in his very first Clasico, he turned in a Man-of-the-Match display which included several saving tackles, pace, poise, positioning and the equalising goal which kept his team in the tie when the Catalans looked as if they could take control.
In the second leg at Camp Nou, Varane was outstanding once more as he made one last-ditch tackle in the area and added yet another goal with a crashing header to make it 3-0 before Jordi Alba's late consolation. The defender scored two goals in the tie (the same as Cristiano Ronaldo) and saved a number of others. Yet perhaps even more incredibly for his first and second Clasico clashes, he did not commit one single foul in either match.
In the space of just one-and-a-half seasons, Varane has gone from being Madrid's fifth-choice centre-back, to their fourth, third, second and now perhaps even their first, moving above Ricardo Carvalho, Raul Albiol and, most recently, Pepe, in the pecking order.
The Portugal defender is the latest man to be displaced by Varane and he claims the Frenchman can become the best defender around. "He is a very humble guy but he has tremendous quality. At the start of the season, I told him that within two years, he will be one of the best centre-backs in the world," the 30-year-old explained.
In the meantime, however, the teenager's next task will be to help Real overcome Manchester United in the last 16 of the Champions League at Old Trafford.
But had things turned out differently, Varane could have been playing in red on Tuesday, and not white.
Sir Alex Ferguson was a big admirer of the French teenager and Manchester United looked set to win the race for the stylish defender in the summer of 2011.
Zinedine Zidane changed all that. The France great travelled to Lens on a charm offensive to persuade Varane to sign for Madrid and not United. A starry-eyed Raphael was subtly seduced: how could he say no to the player he grew up idolising and cheered to victory in the 1998 World Cup as a football-mad five-year-old? He couldn't.
"I played an active role in his transfer," Zidane said later. "He is a quality player and has an incredible future ahead of him."
Indeed, in an era when top-class central defenders are in short supply, Madrid had signed a man who could conceivably play for over a decade at the Santiago Bernabeu. And after his dynamic displays this term, the player's inital six-year deal (which runs until 2017) is set to be renewed sooner rather than later.
Varane has been constantly compared to Madrid legend and former club captain Fernando Hierro, as well as French World Cup winner Laurent Blanc, but already looks likely to go on and become better than both.
"Varane has the same intelligence, the same calmness on the ball and the same presence as Laurent Blanc on the pitch," Jose Mourinho told France Football in an interview. "But with all due respect to Blanc, Varane is much faster. For now, he is still a kid. But I hope and think that when he reaches maturity at 26-27 he will be better than Blanc."
And Hierro also praised the youngster. "Varane is very good," Hierro said recently. "He's magnificent and he's got it all. He's a player with good ball control, good positioning and he's very fast. He's also strong in the air in both boxes."
Raphael is tall (1.91m) with extraordinary aerial ability, pace, poise, timing, technique and - as his two Clasico strikes showed - even has an excellent eye for goal. He has all the attributes to go on and become the world's best defender - and no apparent weaknesses.
Indeed, with his pace, height and long legs, Varane would be the one player possibly able to contain the threat of Cristiano Ronaldo on the forward's romantic return to Old Trafford this week. But unfortunately for Ferguson, the Frenchman, like the Portuguese, will be playing for Real Madrid on Tuesday.
