SINGAPORE: Two men received jail sentences separately on Thursday for voluntarily causing grievous hurt.

In the first case, 42-year-old delivery man Lim Kheng Heng was jailed 30 months after he got involved in a brawl which left a man dead. The incident took place in July last year at a coffeeshop in Tampines.

The court heard that a disagreement had erupted between Lim and 65-year-old Lim Kah Ho, a cue sports referee, during a drinking session with some friends.

Following the disagreement, Lim punched the elderly Lim in the face and kicked him twice in his abdominal area.

The day after, he suffered breathing difficulties and was treated in hospital and discharged. He was later found motionless in his bed at home.

An autopsy revealed that Lim Kah Ho's death was a result of the kicks he had received in the stomach by Lim, which had led to internal bleeding, and an eventual cardiac arrest.

The district judge backdated Lim's sentence to July 7 last year, when he was first remanded.

In the second case, a bodyguard was jailed nine months for punching and kicking his wife which left her with a fractured right arm.

Ramadas Kanesan, 27, was also jailed another two months for breaching the terms of a personal protection order that his wife took out against him, and for criminal intimidation against her cousin.

Ramadas assaulted his wife in March this year at a void deck in Potong Pasir.

The couple had been having alcoholic drinks with friends. Ramadas became angry with Ms Vanija Sohan Chand, 26, after she interrupted a conversation, and began assaulting her.

In meting out the sentence, the district judge called the facts of the case "disturbing", noting that Ramadas had indulged in "thuggish" behaviour on his wife who he had been married to for only three months.

The fact that Ramadas was intoxicated at the time was not an excuse, the judge added, as Ms Vanija was defenceless.

While out on bail for the offence, Ramadas had also breached the terms of a personal protection order by sending Ms Vanija a string of threatening text messages.
