Its a mystery and there is no smoke without a fire. I think Gopalan has attempted to access some privileges or documents and they are trying to bar him.

I think that's still the age-old Chinese strategem of killing the chicken to warn the monkeys. There're Singapore dissidents all over the world who are less vocal or aggressive than Gopalan Nair. This is to warn them to stay less vocal and get on with life instead of inviting trouble. Many of these dissidents may have given up Singapore citizenship, but still have relatives and ties in Singapore to consider.

This must have occurred to them too. So why....

The reason must have been not because Gopalan was no longer a Sinkie but was a US citizen, and their actions were decided by this fact...

He apologised to get his exit visa out of Singapore. Once safely back in US, he retracted his apology. That's why.

ok...but then why did they take so long to start these proceedings...particularly since he retracted his apology straight upon his return to the states...why not do it straight after his retraction?...

I think that even the Civil Service and ruling party Government have to comply and conform with the procedures and delays of bureaucracy. For example, meetings have to be called and discussions made, differences in opinions settled first before decision on action.

This new gopalan issue will receive BIG BIG news in the 154th and that is why. It's all part of nation building!

You really can come up with left field answers.

I think Gopalan is enjoying reciprocal right or benefits in a foreign country (probably US) based on his (past) membership to the local law fraternity. They must have found out and screwing him.

Give you an example - Bankers Club in Malaysia has reciprocal right to some local clubs. It will require some kind of blackballing by the original clubs for blacklisting to be distributed to clubs worldwide.

Anyway Gopalan was well known for club runs, remember Changi Sailing Club where he made a public appeal for a member to admit him as guest.

He already owes close to $9,000 from a previous court case before his migration that he still owes the govt and they have not chased him. I think one of the local wigs must have spotted him in an overseas club while somooching with an intern - Shamugam/Davinder like.

this is peasantpore, a typical chink city where most peasants, under the guise of democracy has to toil all day to repay their various debts and 'kowtow' to their leader via resigned mute silence over abuses.

If you read his blog (which I personally feel is the lamest blog I have ever read except from xiaxue.com or dawnyang) he talked about retrieval of some court papers which gels in nicely with what Scroobal was saying. But even that is flimsy as other lawyers can try to access it for him.
