Top Malay student scores A1 for Chinese

... India market will soon pick up to beat china market while india population is believed will have larger population than china in the next 10-20 years.

Are we going to learn to speak Tamil just to accomodate to the market changes just like now for non-chinese learning to speak chinese to accomodate to the China market?
unless u wan 2 miss out ze lucratif indian market den ...

but india quite tough leh ... unlike in china, u can speak putonghua thruout n dey understand u ... but diff indian states gt diff official languages ... :(

Was my "prima facie" impression too.

What the govt failed to mention in its push to study Chinese (or more accurately Mandarin) is that one is actually competing against more than 1 billion "native speakers" -not to mention the millions of overseas chinese all over the world.

So ability in Mandarin is not a rare commodity and people with knowlege of Mandarin is the most numerous and easily available.
If we follow Law of Supply and Demand-means its of low value.

There are also no shortage of non chinese who knows Mandarin-China has millions of non Chinese(non Han people) who are schooled in Mandarin.

Looking on a worlwide basis,I would even say that Mandarin speakers are amongst the lowest paid people in the world (using salaries in China as an indicator).

My black friend from the States can speak Chinese as well as I do. We sometimes converse the whole day in Chinese with those coloful expressions and all when we are tired of English! :D:D:D

I'm not Chinese obviously

What has my race got to with this discussion btw? I know second generation Chinese Americans who can't speak a word of Mandarin or Chinese dialect to save their lives.

Oh those are false Chinese. I think I'll call them Chinks haha.

I on the other hand am Caucasian-Chinese yet I can speak both Chinese and English rather impeccably.

While China market is in demand, everybody die-die must speak chinese and those non-chinese have to follow suit taking up chinese language course.

India market will soon pick up to beat china market while india population is believed will have larger population than china in the next 10-20 years.

And adopt their infamous caste system? India overtaking China economically?

Hmm, you are in a good mood for a nice little joke I can tell.

And the fact is, English became their national language overtaking all their stupid languages. We can speak in English anywhere in India and there would be people who would understand us regardless, like in Singapore.

We have to thank the British colonialists for that.

LOL it sucks like that. ANyhow look at japan, korea, china all speak their native language and doing well and even ang mohs speak their language.

Hmm.... everybody have different views. In the near future, economy sparring will be between China and India, if we look at population growth, India may overcome China.

In terms of their government stability, both China and India are still weak just like corrupted Malaysia Govt.

Nonetheless,Singapore is even worst, far more corrupted making it legal where no ones dare to push for tranparency.

But where language is concern, english should be adopted as primary language while others to be remain as second-language for individual comfort.

Likewise, I speak english most of the time so not to let non-chinese left-out during the conversation.

But I still keep my chinese language open for some who wants to communicate with me in mandarin in person.

But as for the economy changes as I mentioned in my earlier post, I do worried future generation to keep afloat in the employment may need to learn Tamil if India to take over economy someday. This can be stressful.

Where is the full stop for language barrier?

in the first place, PAP govt shouldn't have meddle with spore's language policy and turn english language into a first language in this country. its 97 percent and above asian here. where's the pride of asian language? where's the respect for asian language?

anyway, your fear is uncalled for. PAP govt is die hard english language fan.

When I think of India, hmm, I think of a big toilet. I mean, the first thing that comes to my mind about India is that, it is a very dirty place (I think even worse than Manila) and then, the poor people that seemed to make up 80% of the total population there?

Nothing wrong with their financial status, but, when you go into a poor neighborhood, the first thing you know is that, sanitation and hygiene standards are extremely poor.

If you go to their markets you'll experience lots of dirt and lots of flies, it's very bad, like for example you can see things like whole slaughtered chickens being totally, I mean TOTALLY, covered by flies.

And maybe this is not right, but look at their so-called holy Ganges river too. It's really not clean or what you think it should be.

Well here goes the old ball game, the usual Nationalist VS Globalist argument ;):):)

Japan USED to be doing well in the 70s and 80s, yeah the corporation, or the zaibatsu, is their extended family and there were beautiful things like job-for-life, but not so today. Domestically more people there are now taking a more serious view of the International Language that is English.

Korea is alright. Yeah I think the Korean's understanding of English is even poorer than the Japanese which is not really saying much too.

China is growing, but they are also into learning English just like the Japanese. And like I said earlier, to work in modern cities like Shanghai you don't really need to know any Chinese to get by (though of course it would be advantageous). It is that globalized.

And call me a snob or imperialist or whatever, but I pretty much despise those who can't speak in English. Not those who can't speak it well (I don't take a French attitude lol and I never liked to offer corrections to other people's English including your locals and my friends in East Asia and I prefer the approach to do my best to understand what they mean) but more so, THOSE WHO DON'T EVEN TRY.

One of ur best posts here. :D

I never knew it was so disgusting like that.

These kelings however still want to claim equal status with china, even saying they are better than USA or on par.

I suppose "ang moh" means Caucasian.

Well, I can see you are making a really good try hoping to hurt and put down others you don't even know, I have seen similar attacks from others on other people before and I applaud your incredible determination in being the next one in line, but I am very disappointed with the outcome simply because, I couldn't be affected at all.

I should believe you are very disappointed too. I dragged my English father to read your post (he doesn't really like computers much less surfing online) and after scrutinizing me he looked at me and said: "No you can't be French either. Go ask your mother."

And I glared at him. And we both laughed.

Say, a grandma from a remote village in uganda, she doesn't know how to speak english, and she's arrogant? Warped logic u have.

Say, a grandma from a remote village in uganda, she doesn't know how to speak english, and she's arrogant? Warped logic u have.

You misunderstood me really. She doesn't even what is English, that's pardonable.

What I meant was the younger, more-informed (who least have some literate skills and can read a newspaper) generation of people who work and live overseas (like USA and the UK) and choose to keep to themselves and their own race and those other obstinate ones domestically who laughably still believe they are the 'best race' and they don't see the need to learn and use English.

Such ultranationalists and their families must totally be cleansed and/or be confined to concentration camps (to reform their erroneous and misguided ultranationalist thinking) to pave the way for globalization in this new age.
