The spread of AIDS (acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome) is an alarming problem in South Africa with up to 31% of pregnant women found to be HIV infected in 2005 and the infection rate among adults estimated at 20%.
Until 1998 South Africa had one of the fastest expanding epidemics in the world, but HIV prevalence now appears to have stabilized, and may even be declining slightly. Among teenage girls, the rate fell from 16.1% in 2004 to 12.9% in 2007, possibly indicating a drop in the rate of new infections. The health department believes this is due to a change in safer sexual practices among younger women.
