BREAKING NEWS: PM wants TOC gazetted as Political Association

The Prime Minister of Singapore has revealed his intentions to declare The Online Citizen as a political association.

According to an email sent to TOC at 5pm yesterday evening by the Prime Minister’s office, the Prime Minister ”intends to declare the owners, editorial team, and administrators of The Online Citizen, by order in the Gazette, to be a political association for the purposes of the Political Donations Act. The owners, editorial team, and administrators of The Online Citizen have been determined to be an organization whose objects or activities relate wholly or mainly to politics in Singapore.”

This means that TOC is barred from receiving funds from foreign donors, letting foreigners take part in its events, operating as a political party and being affiliated to any local or foreign political party.

It is also not allowed to use its funds, premises and new media platforms in any election here, including the sponsoring of any candidate or member.
TOC has 14 days to reveal the identities of its owners, editorial team and administrators. TOC is also required to designate a President, Treasurer and Secretary of the association, and they will be responsible for the preparation and accuracy of the donations reports for The Online Citizen.

The last group to be gazetted is human rights advocacy NGO Maruah in November last year. Maruah is the fourth group -after the Open Singapore Centre, the Think Centre and Singaporeans For Democracy – to be gazetted as a political association.

If TOC complies, it will be the fifth. It will also be the first time bloggers are considered a political association

So what's next? will mediacorp be gazeetted as political association too since the blind and deaf are also aware of how the main stream media spin in favour of PAP - always. That means all foreigners working in main stream media must be evacauated immediately to avoid any political association and so are all the foreign grassroots workers. God damned it! I would consider this to be good news and bad news.

Good news in the sense that PAP is taking the activities and publication of TOC seriously ad TOC had shown its ability to influence into the establishment way of thinking.

Bad news as if TOC were to complie, then the flexiblity that TOC had sort of enjoyed will now be curtailed.

Let's hope TOC will not comply. This is PAP rule, abusing of power and not under any constitution to comply. We cannot have a system whereby the rich can easily get away with a pinch in the butt for being noti and the poor are being thrown in jail and IMH without trial unless proven innocent.

Last month, all 6 opposition political parties responded to TOC’s invitation to participate at its inaugural Face-to-Face Forum. Although the Worker’s Party wasn’t represented by Secretary-General Low Thia Khiang or Chairman Sylvia Lim, it was still represented by a member of the WP Central Executive Committee. The forum was almost full-house with an attendance strength of 350. A TOC spokesperson didn’t mince his words on the intention to turn TOC into the “kingmaker” of the Opposition. “It is our intention to promote TOC as the defacto online platform for the Opposition to engage netizens,” he said.
