"TOC is anti-gov..."

I refer to the letter of November 18, 2008, from Mr. Chua Seng Yang, "Questions on investment product rally." Mr. Chua, like many others, may have different opinions and points of view on the issue of the collapse of structured investment products, and we all should accommodate and respect opinions and points of view that are different from our own. However, Mr. Chua has also written, "It was not too long ago that Mr Tan was the chief executive officer of NTUC Income and his own agents adopted the same practices which he now deems unscrupulous. Why did Mr Tan not tell his agents to practise more ethics then, when he was CEO?" I would like to invite Mr. Chua to substantiate his allegation, which I find groundless and even slanderous.

I have had the privilege of working with Mr. Tan Kin Lian in NTUC Income several years ago, in a position directly linking senior management to agency sales force. As far as I know, at no time did Mr. Tan advocate any unethical or unscrupulous practices for his sales force. The highest risk product available from NTUC Income then was probably the Technology Fund ILP (investment-linked policy). It also sustained hefty losses during the dot.com crash of the early 2000s but there was no complaint of mis-selling from investors like what is happening with the Lehman Brothers minibonds now. That was because investment losses and mis-selling or misrepresentation are different things. When investors are fully aware of the risks, there's no complaint about losses.

The character assassination has begun.

Straits Times is really SHAMELESS to allow such rubbish to be published.

Mr Tan should SUE both of them for defamation !

as the story rolls on, more light gradually shed on.....

Dear Chua Sheng Yang,

I do not know you but I cannot standby and watch while you go lambasting Mr Tan Kin Lian as if you have a sword to grind with him.

Now, if Mr Tan is as bad as you make him out to be when he was CEO of NTUC, how about showing the same level of disdain toward PAP’s Mr Tharman Shamugaratnan?

Mr Tharman was a convict, convicted under the official secrets act while he was director of MAS. The PAP was able to ‘move on’ with his conviction, ignore it, gave him a place in PAP, and mind you a very high place at that, got back his job at MAS with very a much improved package with autonomous authority over the same institution that charged him for revealing secret information and being made the Minister for Finance that looks after our national reserves.
You might counter-suggest that we should judge people for what they are doing now rather than what they had done and I would be the first to agree with you.

Whether I agree with your assessment of Mr Tan or not is not my intention in this post. All I know is that Mr Tan stepped forward when all the others in higher places have turned their backs and ran away. We cannot ignore this fact and this fact alone gives immense credit to Mr Tan. Thousands upon thousands have found it comfortable to lean on his shoulders and these thousands, for whatever reasons you may suggest otherwise, cannot be wrong.

Furthermore, if Mr Tan is as self-serving and attention grabbing like you claim he is, I do not doubt for one moment that the PAP machinery will let him do what he has been doing thus far. The fact that the PAP machinery did nothing to him suggests that he is doing something right for the community of depressed investors which even the PAP found it not necessary to entertain.

I applaud Mr Tan Kin Lian for being so quick off the block in helping the misled investors when others in higher office were still in shock and did not know how to react.

I believe it was because of his swift reaction that prevented the Opposition from making it an issue of their own and thus prevented a more direct confrontation between Opposition-led investors against the ruling PAP govt. The cost of such confrontion could be tragic in its most extreme sense, and, who is to say it won’t happen? Money is the root of all evil and because of money, it can lead one to misplaced sanity and may even kill for or because of it.

Mr Tan Kin Lian is a true son and a true hero to the people of Singapore and no one can dispute this.

that paragraphed inked in red really deserve some insight.

does the gabramen invest CPF monies into all this quacky bonds, structured fund or whatever that could be shaky now??

2.5% interest to remain like the very "same words" when investor bought into lehman's high interest rate returns.

now let's open the festering decays peesailand faced:

1. NKF
2. RENCI
3. LEHMAN

Build upon the following response from a TOC Reader:

"This matter was allowed to fester without any direction for so very long a time. There was plenty of opportunity for anyone to step into the medley to fill in the missing narrative. So if the govt didnt step in, how can you blame so many aggrieved investors should they gravitate towards Mr Tan?"

If MAS and the FIs had taken quick actions to collectively helping the emotional investors like NKF and Ministry of Health in handling the public anger in NKF saga, no one will need to go to Speakers' Corner to plea their case.

if we continue, there were even more in the past. what did the gabramen did then? it seemed that they did alot but in the end, it was NOTHING....all who were being affected just gotta accept their fate and dejectedly left to lick their own wounds:oIo:

there is another "MAS"....mas selamat - where the hell is this limping joker??

if TOC is ant-govt, then what places wayang party ???

this chua chap obviously haven't been surfing the net. TOC is quite mild compared to other blogs.

anti- TOC??:p:confused: how we know? u should know better yourself.

I reclassified the post into points. For the full post, please refer to the attached article in leetahbar's post above.

(1) All I know is that Mr Tan stepped forward when all the others in higher places have turned their backs and ran away. We cannot ignore this fact and this fact alone gives immense credit to Mr Tan. Thousands upon thousands have found it comfortable to lean on his shoulders and these thousands, for whatever reasons you may suggest otherwise, cannot be wrong.

This is the best reason why it is so important to keep in the public's mind and to champion visible causes.

(2) Furthermore, if Mr Tan is as self-serving and attention grabbing like you claim he is, I do not doubt for one moment that the PAP machinery will let him do what he has been doing thus far. The fact that the PAP machinery did nothing to him suggests that he is doing something right for the community of depressed investors which even the PAP found it not necessary to entertain.

How did he conclude that PAP's silence means approval?

(3) I believe it was because of his swift reaction that prevented the Opposition from making it an issue of their own and thus prevented a more direct confrontation between Opposition-led investors against the ruling PAP govt. The cost of such confrontion could be tragic in its most extreme sense, and, who is to say it won’t happen? Money is the root of all evil and because of money, it can lead one to misplaced sanity and may even kill for or because of it.

His opinion is that the opposition's intervention will cause tragedy?

In the first place, will the opposition intervene at all? Let alone confront.

(4) Mr Tan Kin Lian is a true son and a true hero to the people of Singapore and no one can dispute this.

That the reason why politicians must speak up.

I find the anonymity surprising given that it was written to the Straits Times.

I can't imagine chaps like Tan Kin Lian, Leong Sze Hian and now P N Balji being "anti-govt" let alone younger chaps like Choo.

if TOC is ant-govt, then what places wayang party ???

this chua chap obviously haven't been surfing the net. TOC is quite mild compared to other blogs.

It will probably result in a political party that will take on the other opposition parties in the weaker GRCs.

Though i find it amazing that the wayangparty is now aligned with the TOC and even more amazing that TKL is a prime mover in the world of WayangParty-TOC politics.

So coincidental:
  • TOC formed
  • Heavy press coverage on TOC
  • Good acceptance of TOC as a de facto website for responsible reporting and coverage
  • TKL take limelight
  • Good acceptance of TKL's leadership
  • Announcement on the Election
  • TKL has tremendous visibility in the Net, in the Press and in Hong Lim Park
The question is: If this result in a new political party, will it be good for the voters?

For the voters, possibly if we compare this against the potential of the current opposition.

For the current opposition, may or may not, depending on whether they compete for the same ward(s). Checkmate possible.

Sound interesting, what do you means TKL is a prime mover in the world of WayangParty-TOC politics?

Can explain?

wayangparty will make an announcement on this matter in due course.

I heard Mr Tan Kin Lian is responsible for ending the feud between the two blogs.

TOC, Mr Tan's blog and wayangparty together have the largest number of readers combined in Singapore's blogosphere, it make sense for them to stand united together against the MSM instead of sniping at each other.

and wayangparty has been publicizing Mr Tan's rallies, it is weird for them to continue attacking TOC which Mr Tan is part of.

dun ask me, i think the wayangparty guys give face to TKL. i mean TKL is a key member of TOC, wacking TOC = wacking TKL in some ways. TKL must have dangled a big carrot to induce wayangparty stop the bickering.
