All the CSI wannabies here make the basic assumption that IP addresses are like phone numbers... that if I hand out a number it can be used to track someone down.

In reality, IP addresses on their own mean absolutely nothing firstly because very few people have assigned static IP addresses and secondly because a dynamic IP address [belonging to their ISP] is useless without a time stamp. Nobody has ever asked me for a time stamp associated with a dynamic IP address so I can safely assume that they don't need it.:p

99% of all regular users of this forum connect either using an anonymiser or via a VPN account which simply means that neither myself nor the ISP they are using have a clue who they actually are. They could be traced in theory but it would require the resources of interpol and the CIA combined and even then it would take a long time.

You'd have to be the key player in an international child porn distribution ring or the new leader of al-Qaeda for such resources be thrown into tracking you down.

Please don't ask me for IP addresses. There's no point.

It's understandable that people get upset when they're abused or threatened both in real life and in cyberspace. However as long as you're real identity isn't revealed on line, threats are limited to abusing an on-line moniker and nothing more.
