true....

but pap trying to save a few kids from injuries every year.

i know it is safer. but there are a lot of morons in singapore, they will cost injuries to themselves and others.

it is workable. But there is nothing to be gain from all these noises. you will feel happy at that time, but you will forgot about it after a while.

the ban is not 38 years. is it that long? i feel younger.

True. But safety can be enforced if the sale and letting off of fireworks is supervised.

Designate a few common areas where fireworks can be sold and used. Sell only the big 炮竹 type of firecrackers and not the loose ones. All firecrackers bought must be set off on the spot. Cannot 打包 go home and play.

I understand safety is a concern but it should not be the reason for keeping the ban. Even Zoukout was thought to be logistically impossible before ... but look where we are now.

If firecrackers with the same potency of old are made legally available, I can tell you that in the internet age, there will be people who who will add ingredients together with the combustion powder of firecrackers to make crude pipe bombs. Don't ask for trouble!

The custom of setting firecrackers, was a traditional practice to frighten the "年兽" beast. Legend has it this creature terrorized the villagers and pillage their crops all year round.:(

The only way to ensure they made it thru the year safely "过年", is to repel this beast with fireworks.
Failure to do so, means you would risk losing your harvest, or worst to get eaten up by the beast!:biggrin:

Good point. I'm surprised no one has brought up the fact that Seehum Loong lit a chain of firecrackers back in 2004. This was a good end to a bad year of SARS-induced recession.

Best hope is when old man kicks the bucket. The law was enacted as a pet project by him.

Old man has also reversed the decisions about racing and casinos...

But I understand his fear... alot of people might be setting off fireworks at his funeral

Valid point. Never underestimate the idle stupidity of some people. I bet Early Man have been trying to blow things up since we discovered fire.

I think firecrackers were banned in this country since 1972

Since then some things have changed:

1) Houses aren't made of wood anymore
2) Quality and safety standards of firecrackers have increased

If fireworks are sold as a controlled item to the public and only permitted to be set off at designated places and hours of the day, can our young experience the exhilaration and tradition once more?

Laws were implemented because they were needed at the point in time. They also need to be periodically reviewed for relevancy.

Thoughts please......

Sorry this kind of things is only for The father and son to Play during Chinese New Year. sinkie can only watch!
